Sky wifi sucks

I simply can't believe how crap Sky is, my router drops devices all the time, you can't set the lease time, anything on wifi simply won't work properly I am honestly shocked how bad the box is...printers time out, phones drop out, **bleep** is going on sky?

@StevePn - You can run a line test on The My Sky App to check that there isn't an underlying issue on your line.

Let me know what it comes back with.

Re: Sky wifi sucks

did the check, says OK, but still kids say it drops and I see it does, this is not just one device but many if not all on wifi (including the sky q box)...shocked someone replied to thanks :), your lease time is 120 mins I'm sure this doesn't help...thanks...

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Lol I love how your told to check the line when it's the WiFi chip in the router I can have half a signal while in the same room as the router. Not to mention I have 4 sky mini boxes that are supposed to be WiFi extenders 🤣 my signal upstairs is pointless I use my phone's 4g instead.

Basically the routers are not fit for purpose, take a Google this isn't a new problem everyone has the same problem. Basically sky suck, want to make the WiFi useless so you pay to upgrade to their better router. It's a joke.

And like you if ever you bring it up they ask you to check the line that has nothing to do with wifi it's hilarious how useless they are.

@garope people use the term WiFi  for both their external and internal speeds Sky of course only guarantee external speeds which is why in the first instance customers are asked to check those if those are ok @StevePn would be given advice on how to improve internal speeds..

Internal WiFi issues affect every ISP not just Sky but are largely outside the isp's control.. WiFi signals can be disrupted by many things but most commonly interference as the bands used are heavily used by other wireless kit. Boosters like your Q minions need a strong signal to boost - if their connection is poor their hotspots are slow.

There are loads of things you can try to improve WiFi in your home firstly download a WiFi analyser app which will show all of the WiFi networks in range, the channel they are using and signal strength. Another network on the same of adjacent channel will cause interference reducing speeds and the 2.4GHz band only has room for 3 bands that do not interfere to some extent. The app won't show interference from other wireless but not WiFi devices like DECT phones, speakers etc but turning anything like that off should show a gain and simply moving the source a few inches can help. .

You need a strong signal to get good speed so try moving the hub higher can have immediate results as you stop signal loss due to furniture etc. More ideas here Sky Help - Slow wifi

You can improve the signal of your Q minis upstairs by investing in a pair of Powerline adapters to get a strong signal to the furthest one works for me.

I get WiFi speed of 300Mb/s around my home by these simple steps so sorry I would challenge your assumption that Sky kit is faulty. It has its limitations.of course but can deliver decent speeds if set up properly.

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Totally agree routers are awful and no point complaining having an another disinterested BT engineer sent round for a grumble won't fix a poor router been back with Sky for a few months now and so regretting my decision.

@Gsejeksk it is cheap and simple to add as many ethernet ports you need by buying a cheap unmanaged ethernet switch. If you want/need better wifi etc you can always buy and use your own modem router. In independent tests Sky hubs come out about as well as there competitors models. Moral you get what you pay for in this world sadly.

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Or get a provider who issues a router that is up to the job ! Broadband is a package that is paid for monthly and should included the router. I haven't had the need to install my own network when with other providers how is this even a defence when paying line rental and monthly! I suggest I am not getting what I am paying for with this appalling router, streaming and wifi calls are virtually impossible and Sky do not care untill the day I leave. Having had virgin and being able to hop on both neigbours BT wifi I do not agree that the sky router is anywhere near as good as their competitors

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Very often on here its down to the Sky Q Mesh thats causing the issue.  But yes I agree the actual Sky Routers are utter rubbish as well.  Copied this from another post I made, give this a go:

The sky q mesh basically causes a lot more problems than it solves.  What basically ends up happening is your devices dont jump between the various base stations even when the main hub would give it the best connection, you end up connected to one of your minis and your connection slows down.  The whole Q mesh is awful and in general one of the reasons I am not a fan of mesh systems at all but the Q implementation is perticularly bad.  The best option (and I know its not for everyone) is cable in your sky q via ethernet and turn off wifi on the boxes totally.  The just use your sky hub for wifi.

You can easily do a test.  Turn off all your sky boxes at the mains and only leave your sky hub connected.  Have a walk round your house and test speeds.  That will quickly tell you if the Q mesh is the problem.

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Absolutely **bleep**e internet, made more unpalatable with how much we're paying for it.

Two of us wfh, one on wifi and other hardwired in via those plug in network things. Unmanageable as one or both of us have connection problems.

Government advice is work from home where you can - it should be work from home where you can and your internet provider isn't **bleep** **bleep**.

@KJBoylan do you just want to vent or do you want help?

If the second why not do as suggested earlier in the thread and run the connection test in the My Sky app as thst will check if the fault is external and needs an engineer to fix. If that comes back clear why not pist your hub's connection stats which will allow forum members to see what maybe the issue? See Find your Sky Broadband router statistics

It would help if you explain what the issues are in a little detail eg do video calls buffer and do you mean Powerline Adapters when you typed "plug in network things".
