Is the 86u pro the same as the 86u?

The pro is WiFi 6 whereas the original is only WiFi 5

I'm trying to set up the tp link in modem mode but I'm stuck on what I need to put for 

VPI and VCI when I select my isp on the settings

what do I need to put here?

What model is it ie vr2100 or td w9970?

What connection a do you have

ie sky essentials adsl or sky superfast fttc (vdsl) etc?

When I select sky vdsl the option to enable vlan isn't there. I followed a different tutorial and got the thing in modem mode. 

now I have to set up the router for the first time what's the best way to do it?

I assume you went for the asus rt ax82t and not the dsl version. 

First probably best to ethernet the asus to the sky hub for firmware upgrade. Then disconnect the sky hub and plug in the tp link . Then ethernet the asus to the tp link

Look for client identifier (option 61) and enter

anything@skydsl|anything

The jury is out as the whether you need to add vlan id to the asus (we'll cross that bridge when it comes)

I went for the RT - AX86U 

no matter how I connect the asus router to the sky one or the modem the e light stays red. How do I update the router? Currently have the sky one plugged back in

i still can't get the tp link into bridge mode as when I'm choosing my isp there is no Sky mer vdsl option. Only a sky adsl option but it doesn't say mer 

any help?

@OnlyAsh  TD-W9970 bridge mode setting for sky fttc should look like the image below,

if needed,

Add > configure as screenshot > Save & it should then look like the 2nd image with just the 1 entry 👍

When I log in to the tp link my screen looks nothing like that I have a much older looking layout? Is it still possible to do if so how do I get to that page? 

Im completely lost with this and as you can imagine it's frustrating having to keep unplugging different routers just so I can have internet

Advanced > Network  > Internet.

If it doesn't match the previous posted image, can you screenshot it & post back,

When I log in this is the screen I get when I go to network there is no internet settings? 

I also have no advanced settings 

am I doing something wrong?
