Perhaps not router after all - ONT? Gigafast

Hi,

I previously posted thinking there was an issue with my SR03 - and spent a while looking at other routers, there has been some discussion around it needing to be DSL and others say for FTTP the ONT has the modem so no need, so I thought i'd do a test, BTW my laptop has a Killer E2500 Gigabit ethernet controller and connects at 1Gbps and has seen around 1G connections in the past.

So I unlugged the hub and plugged it into the laptop, 1Gbps link negotiated, it got an IP address and an internet connection,I thought why not do a speed test, so I went to fast.com, and I got a measley 180Mbps download speed, tried my 2nd laptop (hp zbook), almst identical (170), I tried using a different cable (they send a seperate cable in a jiffy bag for some reason) no change, so as a last resort I decided to power cycle the ONT, and it came back up with the same speed.  The SR203 reports this:

Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed "4 nines and 2 zero's" <-Won't let me put this number in
UpStream Connection Speed "115000"

So, i'm a bit confused, have they not changed my fibre profile? I was on 150Mbps before, anyone else had this "issue"?

TIA

@SkyUserAaron if you have a full fibre connection ignore anything about DSL as thst only applies to services over copper. To connect to a Sky full fibre service you need a router that supports either DHCPv4 Option61 or DHCPv6 PD as otherwise you cannot authenticate the connection. Asus routers are popular choices

I have no idea how you got a laptop to connect to anything unless you had set up connection software which you dont mention. It might have been a test connection for engineers to use but that is a wild guess.

The speeds in the connection stats a SR203 reports on full fibre connection are figures Sky paste in and are not a direct measurement from the hub. If you want an measurment of your connection speed run the full connection test in the My Sky app where you will find a history on measurements run by Sky's test system.

Re: Perhaps not router after all - ONT? Gigafast

Hi,

Thanks for your reply,

No special software needed, the ONT contains the modem which gives the address and gateway /DNS just as it would to the router, the only thing it does differently is just not route!  I doubt very much if it is a "test" as the ONT doesn't know what is plugged into it just a device that requests DHCP and negotiation, the speed is the exact same direct to ONT or via HUB.

One of the reasons i've done the testing before spending money on a new router.

I can repower the ONT, the laptop gets the ethernet link up, gets the standard 169.x address for no DHCP then once the mode has done what is necerray it gives me the same settings as was on my HUB.

It's a Killer E2500 NIC

TIA

@SkyUserAaron whatever you clearly think you know what you are doing but I can assure you thst you need a router to connect reliably to Sky's network and keep that connection live. A modem and a router have different functions as a little basic research would tell you..

Re: Perhaps not router after all - ONT? Gigafast

I know the difference between a router and a modem, I only plugged direct to do  a speed test, not for a "replacement". i find it more than coincidence that the speed obtained from the router is almost identical to that out of the ONT, Sky "experts" seem to just read from a script and close you down if you go and try and get a technical answer from them, if I am getting the same speed as my old ultra fast service, thats £15 I can save, they say they only guarantee the speed to the hub, but the hub lies, so what am I supposed to do?

BTW, I had a look on the My sky app but the broadband page just shows "Everything OK", could you please tell me where I can find the information you mentioned above?

TIA

I've taken some screenshots, speed test was Fast.com, this was with everything bar port 4(WAN) and a CAT6 plugged into port 1 (Laptop) connected at 1Gps:
