Same issues 😪

Same issue. Ps5 games are completely un playable online. Will probably have to ditch sky and go back to EE broadband as it seems to be an issue with how sky configure your home broadband with the q boxes. 😕

I'm using Ethernet connected to sky q box.
Unfortunately the router is located on the first floor.
I understand that it's an Ethernet connection is advised however I didn't experience this issue with my old broadband provider.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Huggs1 Well if it is connected to the Sky Q box, which itself is connected back to the router wirelessly, then that's why you are getting the problems, as it isn't a wired connection at all, the first jump is via WiFI.
If you are unable to connect it via a direct cable to the router, then you might want to try powerline adapters.
The Sky Q boxes will not have worked as a mesh for other devices if using another provider, and when using Sky broadband, which allows them too, they prioritise traffic of the Sky Q boxes over any other, as would be expected because they are what the mesh is really for. It is only an add-on nicety that they allow other devices to use them as access points.

Thanks for the feedback however.
When connected to the WiFi the issue is even worse.
Again, before when I was using a bob standard EE router on a basic package the signal was near perfect via WiFi connection.
If Sky broadband cannot offer me a solid internet connection via WiFi then I'm afraid it is not fit for purpose.

@Huggs1 Which router do you have? If it's the flat one that looks like a Sky box that is known to have weaker WiFi performance.
No ISP guarantees performance of WiFi, it is impossible too. You could take your router and put it in 10 different properties, and the performance would be different in every property.
Sky, contractually, are liable for the fixed line connection to your router, and that is what you actually pay for, not "WiFi" as a lot of people think.
If it is reporting the speed they said they would provide you with, and that is what they report in the MySky app, and is not dropping out, which your router stats would show, then you won't make Sky sort something out.
If you get a competent person from Sky they might send an engineer round to see if they can do anything with the WiFi, but that might not solve the issue.

@JPR007 🤣
ISP, MESH other technical jargon.
I have no idea nor do I want to.
All I want is to game online.
The WiFi download speeds/ upload speeds seem fine when I hit the speed test but, if the sky Q system is basically preventing this and causing it to spike when gaming (what ever that means). Then it doesn't suit my needs nor the needs of many others by the sounds of it.
I will check if sky will be willing to re wire my house so I can connect my console directly to the router but it's not an ideal solution. This will hopefully resolve the issue for gaming in one of the rooms of my house.
Thanks again for the feed back.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreSky wont rewire your house, they dont have engineers that are equipped or willing to do that unless your Sky Q system is broken.
If your not happy about being able to game over WiFi with Sky I suggest you get out of your contract asap before you fall out of your cooling off period because after that Sky will certainly not accept lag over WiFi as a fault.

FIX for PS5 lag issues.
I've had issues since getting new Sky Q equipment. Nothing fixed it.
What you need to do is set up TP link kit BUT go in to your PS5 internet settings & set to wired LAN. Reported test stats are poor but if just had my first lag free game in months! Hope this helps.

Dear cusomer,
I have worked on telecoms routers and developed software for them, and I also worked for Bell Labs. Sky router model SR203 has HUGE BANDWIDTH and NO REAL-TIME capability. The problem is NOT your sky internet or WAN, but it is something inbetween you and the WAN ... the LAN router. Such routers are tuned for high speed streaming which is heaverly buffered, so for TV, NetFlix and YouTube that is excellent, but they have 5 or more second lag and that never works for a game. You know that most competitive online games break with half of a second lag! The problem is NOT your sky internet, rather it is your router (some non-sky routers suffer the same problem). Some routers; jot just sky; are not games compatable and will prioritise high speed streaming over interactive games events. So if you play Minecraft that is not especially real-time critical with another person in the house using the network (without internet), OR if you do the same with a remote person in a different location (with internet); in both cases the lag happens and it is the LAN side ie the router that is the problem not the world wide web or internet.
That non real-time, but high speed streaming design does not work for gaming or even for online office apps because gaming is "real-time" and office apps are also "real-time" in a less demanding way, they need user feedback in a timely way as you work - without seconds of lag. A game event can't be buffered up and delayed with other bunches of game events, the effect is terrible lag. It is rather like the number 47 bus that you were waiting for for 90 minutes ... all of a sudden 3 turn up. Sure 3 busses can carry lots of people HUGE BANDWIDTH, but they are way too late for office work and way too late to win any game - NO REAL-TIME response.
It is not just the PS5 or Xbox but any game on any device using that LAN is affected. LAN means local area network that it is the routers job ... even with the internet disconnected the traffic go though the router; so sadly all games devices on that WiFi or Ethernet are affected. If you stream video from one device in the house to another, or from the internet, everything is great as the random lags are covered over by the excellent buffering in the router.
If you experience games lags even with the games machine CPU and GPU super cooled, but never get video lags, then you must realise that it is the router! I hope that helped - would sky tell you that truth?
Kind regards,
Sky customer and Telecoms Security Engineer (not from sky)

I experienced this exact issue yesterday with the new router sky provided me. I played for approx 2-3 hours and every single game was laggy and unplayable. This was even against people i normally have good connection with.
Never experienced these issues previously especially with a wired connection directly from the router. Spoke to Sky this morning and i'm returning the new router and keeping the old Sky Q router because of this issue.
I'm not convinced it the PS5 but allegedly Sky said they've never heard of this issue.

For me I needed to reconfigure the WiFi. The split mesh method sky use makes playing games over WiFi un playable. I managed to configure the sky router to have two networks (2.4ghz & 5ghz) in my home one I use for the sky boxes and one for every thing else and the situation drastically improved. Once my contract with sky is up I will be ditching it. Never had the problem when using ee WiFi network.

I have a wired connection router-ps5 and my connection still drops?....
14 Nov 2022 09:27 PM
I had this problem when I bought a ps5, never had an issue with my ps4.
what fixed it for me was to go into the network settings on the ps5 and force it to use either 2.4ghz or 5ghz instead of automatic, as it lags as it switches between the two trying to find the best signal. There's YouTube videos explaining where the setting is, hopefully that will help.
for reference I have the flat sky q style router
