Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

Hi,

I'm about to install Sky broadband. I'm confused about whether to use my phone socket or the Optical Network Terminal previously installed by another provider. Could someone advise me please?

Re: Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

@Susan168 On returning to sky does it mean that all ties with wightfibre are over and done with, Sky use Openreach as the provider to connect the broadband internet to, so if it was supplied via the telephone socket before it will more than likely be the same again.

The two companies are not the same, and looks like wightfibre are an Altnet so have done there own thing, and if OR/Wightfibre do not have a tie between each other then you may lose all the Fibre that you had installed. Isle of wight is a bit off a mix both ways...

Cannot see if OR have a fibre presence or are installing all over the island! You will know what way you are going, and if sky have given you a reduced speed package on the Broadband to 80 down 20 up as a MAX then you may be going back to phone line connected as before!

TV only then it works with any broadband ISP service so sky say! See the posted link below!

@Susan168 The fact that you have an ONT installed then fibre is it, do you KNOW if it is Openreach will have the name plastered on the front off it!

And if sky have sold you a Full Fibre service connection that also imply's you are going to be using and connecting to that ONT, Master socket will be dead and buired unless it is all an Altnet service which you do not say!

Re: Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

I had a full fibre service (WightFibre) installed a few weeks ago but Sky talked me into going back to their service. I've got a Sky Glass tv arriving today if that helps with information. Nothing to do with Openreach.

@Susan168 Who has the current landline is that with Openreach, wight fibre do seem to be an altnet so you are going to go one step back and have that connection resurected!

If you are ONLY doing a sky TV package AND not the broadband it's just hard to say what from your posting!

Re: Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

Thank you for replying to my post, Jim.

I previously had both Sky internet and a Sky tv package. Then I had Wightfibre, full fibre installed recently just for the broadband and they installed the Optical Network Terminal. However, I'm now returning to Sky broadband Superfast with an internet only tv package with their Glass tv. This is described as Part Fibre Technology.

not heard of Openreach before but they may be the umbrella term for full fibre as I know that different areas have different names.

Re: Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

Thank you Jim for your patient replies to me regarding my post. Yes, all ties to WightFibre will be over. I felt a bit guilty plugging into their ON so I'll go back to the old system. Seems like Openreach coming to Isle of Wight next year.

Re: Optical network terminal already installed by other provider

@Susan168When you cut ties with wightfibre pretty sure that you will see them disconnect the fibre signal to the ONT and you will get a RED alarm light on it, if that is the case then you for sure will not be using it ever! If you have any problems just post back, hope that it all goes smooth for the change back to sky!👍
