FTP - HELP! Getting Sky to engage to Openreach

Hello,

I'm seeking some advice on how to get fibre to the premise.

I live in a small village in Nottinghamshire, some of the properties to the across the road to the rear of my house have the appear to have FTP avaliable to them on the search, however I do not.

For context, I'm currently fed from a buried copper (confirmed to be ducted) which enters the front of the property.
However, to the rear of my house, there is a BT pole which has been confirmed to have fibre on it as well as the old copper.

As I undserstand, only the one property has FTP (i know my neighbours well enough for them to confirm that no one else has FTP).

In order for me to get FTP i'd need to be fed from this pole to the rear, however, in order to carry the line over at high level, i'm going to need a new pole installing, which im more than happy to pay for any costs.

What im struggling with is whenever i have spoken to Sky (or BT) they have simply responded with 'computer says no'.

Openreach will only really speak when contacted by their customer, which in my case is Sky.

There must be someone I can speak to at Sky who will be able to assist in my query?
All i'd like to know is how I get FTP to my premise.

Any help is most appreciarted.

@RichPick Are you pre-paired to pay in excess of £10K to get a pole installed!

@RichPick

I don't think you've researched the logistics and the cost implications involved!

@RichPick

To avoid potential confusion, it's FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) rather than FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

For a domestic broadband connection there's no mechanism through which an ISP can intervene to change the Openreach installation method.

We had an engineer (who subbied to BT installing fibre), over at the house  or something, so whilst he was there i quizzed him. I also work on the fringes of the construction industry so have a vague understanding of the potential cost implications of my endeavours.

The logistics are in principal relatively straight forward from an infrastructure perspective, were talking 30m of fibre cable from an existing pole which is already fibre enabled.
I also own the land where the pole would likely need to be installed (verge at the rear, outside my boundary wall). Access is also great.

I'd like to think that a fully digital fibre system, the connectivity logistics should (i hope) be relatively straight forward (certainly the engineer who came over certainly didnt make out it was particularly difficult).

Theres potentially 4-5 properties around my house which do not currently have FTTP (one being the local village shop, which definately wont be having FTTP any time soon!).

Obviously im aware its going to cost something, the question is how much?
What I'd like, is to request Openreach to send an engineer so i can have a discussion, for them to work up a reasonable plan of action and them to provide a quotation.

So does anyone know who i need to contact?

Thanks

Openreach won't speak with you directly. Their customer would be the ISP ie; Sky.

@RichPick You are a sky customer, so you need to speak to sky, the planning etc is all done by Engineers in India, with some input and advice of the local OR Team on the ground, there is a lot more involved than just throwing up a pole to get Full Fibre onto it!

For background information on FTTPoD

Perhaps note that on the scale of the national rollout target of 80,000+ new FTTP installations every week, there's absolutely no incentive for Openreach to spend considerable time on your particular circumstances unless they are going to make a great deal of money from one-off installation charges (the revenue return on any individual domestic broadband circuit being effectively negligible)

Re: FTP - HELP! Getting Sky to engage to Openreach

What does it say about FTTP here for both your property and the ones you think have FTTP  :

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome

If it only says FTTP on Demand then you could pay for Openreach to do a desktop (ie records) survey to come up with an indicative figure to provide FTTP to you. Or you could pay for an actual survey.

Surveys are always four figures outside big cities (£1-2k usually) and actual installs are always five figure sums (£10-30k) these days. Openreach DO NOT want to do FTTP on Demand at this point in time so you'll be paying a LOT for an install team. Maybe in 5 years or so when they finish all of their commercial rollout they'll be more interested.

You can in theory split the cost with neighbours if they agree to cough up a few grand each. In practice this doesn't work as there will always be people who change their minds.

Also (in theory) you could benefit from a reduced install cost if a neighbour has already paid for FTTP on Demand. In practice Openreach don't want to do this either as all their civils/install teams are 100% committed now - and will be for at least a couple of years.

£2932 + VAT according to that ISP Review article (at 2023 pricing)

Re: FTP - HELP! Getting Sky to engage to Openreach

Yeah its been a while since I looked at survey pricing. Wasn't much point when desktop surveys were north of £30k for even the simplest install.

BTW - I saw the £73k article on ISPReview when they put it up and the funny thing is I know where that stretch of road is - admittedly its been 25 years since I was on it 😄 Again, they just don't want to divert an install team there as they're all committed to the commercial rollout and they never have enough staff in Scotland anyway.
