but I think it's normal to want it as close to possible what you're paying for.

Normal, yes, but not reasonable.  If I chose to  bung BT another £20 a month they'd ramp my FTTP up to 900Mbs inbound at the ONT this afternoon, but I know their Smart Hub 2 would still only deliver a tenth of that into the attic (on a goood day) and nothing at all to the internal garage conversion which has Celotex foil/foam laminate insulation.

It's worth reiterating that none of us are paying for WiFi speed: the subscription and contract with any ISP is for speed delivered to the router and then (possibly) there's a supplement option for them to attempt to provide 'reasonable' wireless coverage (typically with the 'guarantee' that the additional payment is refunded if this isn't achieved).

The underlying infrastructure here is Openreach too, like everywhere (except Hull).

Of course, it helps when a devolved government chooses to bung them the best part of a billion quid to speed up the deployment of fibre-optic across the (admittedly small) nation...

Re: Ultrafast Plus nothing close to 500Mbps

I think you need to be realistic about what speeds you can actually achieve using wireless.  The Ultrafast speeds are only ever going to be consistently  achieved over a wired connection.

While the Sky Booster's do serve a purpose the signal strength will degrade as it works it's way between your router and the booster box, but will usually avoid the Wi-Fi Guarantee kicking in.

My connection speed to the router, and on to my wired desktop, has never dropped below 500 Mbps.

By comparison the performance from the booster in the kitchen - 30 feet away in my 1930's semi -  has always been pretty grim.

Re: Ultrafast Plus nothing close to 500Mbps

Thank you for this.

As I say, my original concern was from a speed of 29Mbps less than 10ft from the router (via one wall) in a new build, with a booster.

Unfortunately I can simply not do wired to my consoles (unless I played in the kitchen) so such a degredation was massively noticeable for me to 29Mbps (which was actually slower than the speed from my base Broadband package at 76Mbps max (which used to be 40Mbps).

You might actually be better off trying it without the booster.

Nice to see someone actually understanding what you will realistically get over WiFi. Rather than people just expecting a miracle

If you are using a mobile upstairs on wifi it will be on 2.4ghz.  At 500Mbps download you have maxed out the 2.4ghz bandwidth.

Re: Ultrafast Plus nothing close to 500Mbps

Hi everyone

Sorry to jump in on another thread, but this is very close to my problem.

I had Superfast and did not have a problem anywhere in the house, mainly because the router was positioned next to my desktop computer.

With Ultrafst Plus i do not have that luxury, because my router had to be fitted in my living room downstairs, while my PC is in another room upstairs.

I have no problem with the speeds i am getting to the property.

I have no problem with the speeds i am getting to my mobile anywhere in the house, obviously better in the room with the router which is 400 Mbps ish, than upstairs which around 140 to 180 Mbps ish.

The set up is as follows: Sky Q in downstairs living room, now with router in same room, Sky Q Mini in room next to living room, Sky Q Mini in upstairs bedroom.

My problem is: My Desktop Computer, which is 9 years old by the way, is across the landing from the upstairs bedroom Sky Q Mini, this is only receiving 7 Mbps at the most, while the majority of the time it is down to Kbps not Mbps.

So my questions are, if i may...

Are there any settings i can tweak, to achieve more Mbps on the PC?

If there are no settings to tweak, would a WiFi extender work, PCIe card or USB dongle?, i think, but not 100% sure that i have some spare slots, but would not be certain which they are.

If there are Cards or USB's that would work, i would appreciate any recommendations, but they need to work with the Sky Hub provided, i really do not want to buy another Router at this stage.

Would a WiFi 6 Card/USB work with the Sky Hub or is that overkill?

Thanks everybody

Regards

Mark

Do you know which species of WiFi that machine is fitted with?  A PC of that vintage is likely to have shipped with something like 802.11n at most, and possibly 802.11g which can only receive a maximum of about 10% of the Hub speed.

It's likely that you've got a free PCI or PCI-E slot inside which could be used to host an 802.11ac card, or you could try a similar specification USB wireless dongle, preferably with an external aerial.
