Ultrafast Plus nothing close to 500Mbps

I've gone through the usual spiel of the Sky speed test which, even when my previous broadband was crawling, showed the speed to the property, and for this is says 500Mbps, but running actual speed tests shows it at between 30mbps and 260mbps, the latter stood literally right next to my router. 

 

I have the sky boosters for signal improvement, but it seems to do nothing. This isn't even remotely close to the speed I pay for and miles off the minimum speed of 400mbps. 

 

Preferably without the nonsensical "is this with a wired connection?", most people don't have that option. My router is in my kitchen, my computer doesn't even have an ethernet port, nor does my phone. Both of those also show slow speeds. 

Connecting either my Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 in via Ethernet into the Booster (which only has one port) also shows slow speeds. 

 

Why is my speed so much slower than I should be getting? (My kitchen is the room directly next to my living room, Kitchen at the front of the house, living room at the back).

I'll happily take advice, but when I can go to a friends house who has Virgin broadband and it doesn't suffer the same wireless speed issues, that highlights that to not be the problem. 

 

Or the time Sky wouldn't help me with slow speeds because the speed in was 50Mbps, only to eventually send someone out (after countless attempts) and then replace the router to solve issues, it shows that the Sky test of speed to the property really doesn't showcase issues. 

 

What I am saying is that that's not the issue here, once in the property dropping from 500 to 29 as it was yesterday, is not acceptable by any stretch of the imagination. I managed 260 first thing in the morning stood right next to the router on my phone. 

 

I never once said I don't want help (it's why I posted on here), but what I am saying is that the speedtest Sky make you go through really doesn't solve anything in the vast majority of real world scenarios. 

 

For reference, on day one, I managed 400mbps as a top speed in another room, which is far more like the performance I would expect, rather than the much, much lower speeds I am experiencing.

When connecting to wifi are you connection to the 2,4ghz or 5ghz band.  2,4ghz while gives better range will give lower speeds.  5Ghz while giving the faster speeds will give a lower range.

 

Are you testing using fast.com?

 

Finally how long have you had Ultrafast?

But how do you suggest any ISP deals with all the possible variations in wireless performance while still making a profit?

The speed we pay for is that delivered to the router, with Sky and with any other ISP.  Beyond that it's all, best effort and (fairly bogus) WiFi 'guarantees' which are nothing of the sort, because they can't be: this is even more the case the higher up the broadband speed spectum one goes.

I do have the one on the right, that's correct. The light for voice is currently active. 

I usually use Speedtest by Ookla for testing my speed, either via the web or by app (on phone), as well as using the speed tests built into both consoles. 

 

I am connected to 5ghz band, and have tried 2.4ghz and it is quicker on 5ghz. Just trying on my phone it was (250Mbps on 5ghz versus 175Mbps on 2,4ghz).

 

I've had it for about 3 weeks, it was not available prior to that in my area, but have had Sky Broadband in this house for 3.5 years (as long as I've been a tennant).

@KRCM  Can you try a spedtest on fast.com, what's the results?

By focusing attention on Wireless performance rather than purely focusing on testing wired. Barring my consoles there is no device in my house that I can even test with a wired connection. 

 

I understand house structure (among other things) can impact wireless performance, which is why I tested right next to the router and also why I have the booster. (For the record I am not in a big house, it's a 2 bedroom terrace) and my devices are as close as possible in the room next to the kitchen.

The next generation ISP routers will be a bit more capable (for compatible client devices) as they will incorporate the WiFi 6 specification, but that's about as much as it's reasonable to expect an ISP to do: the Sky Broadband Hub is an 802.11ac model built to whatever budget was considered appropriate at the time (2018-19).  Some other ISPs almost certainly have better routers (and some will be worse), but that doesn't change the current situation which is they all know they can't reliably deliver the higher tiers of 'Ultrafast' speed over WiFi (and probably never will), and so they fudge the issue in their small-print, and caveat every 'guarantee'.

250 Mbps is the maximum speed on 2.4ghz even on 1Gbps Try out of interest seperating wifi bands and allocate the device used for testing to the 5ghz wifi

 

- Log onto router and go to wifi
- Go to 5ghz band and untick synchronise 2.4ghz and 5ghz
- Go to 5ghz ssid and add -5g at the end
- Save
- Go to individual devices and assign wifi band accordingly

I believe 2.4ghz is capable of the 400-600Mbps speeds with 5ghz at double that (in ideal circumstances), but I am using a 5ghz connection. 

 

It's just alarming that my speed, in many cases, has lost 30-50% of where it was when it was installed with no changes to set up and has been noticeable. Don't get me wrong, even at its worst it's better than what came before it, but I think it's normal to want it as close to possible what you're paying for.
