Recently I've been having numerous occurrences of programmes not recording or trying to watch a channel and getting a black screen and a 'technical issue' message.
looking at this more it seems to when recording 4 programmes at the same time the 5th one will always clash and the channel will go black and display this error message.
Is this a known fault? Do I need a new box?

Please tell us the hardware version shown in
Home - Settings - System Info
Although I can't remember if it has any bearing or not - do you have your own dish or fed by a communal system ?

Thanks - I just wanted to check that it wasn't an early 1TB box which could only record 4 channels
Can I suggest that you check both your cables - place into standby then unscrew the plugs and check that the centre core wire is not broken short - it should protrude slightly from the end of the connector.
When checked replace & ensure they are fully tight

Thanks. Have done that and they looked fine.
If that was the issue would it be resolved by a power-off re-boot as this is what happens. When the box comes back up I can then again record 5 programmes but the issue is re-appearing every week or so.
Also, when the only recording 4 things issue is present I am also unble to record anything from BT Sport ESPN channel as it just fails with 'technical issue' message. Again this is resolved with the re-boot.
Seems like it might be a hardware issue with the box? It is 3 or 4 years old I think.

Sorry but unfortunately I don't really know what might be your issue - if it was a disk issue then I would expect more problems.
One thing you might want to try in case it helps is a reset of the box settings
Go to Home & scroll down to Settings - do not press enter/Select at this point , Press 0 0 1 in sequence, now followed by enter/select to access the Engineer's menu
Then select Reset & select Reset Settings (don't select the others as they have more impact)
NOTE : If you do a reset settings you will need to repair your remote control
