Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
I have installed a TV in my new extension and hung a new TV on the wall, I didn't want a sky box in the room and my TV is only 19mm thick.
I put the mini box in another room and ran a hdmi cable, it's a hi speed hdmi Ethernet cable.
All worked well for 2 weeks but now the cable isn't transmitting a picture, if I plug the sky mini box in next to the tv all is good?
what have I missed?

Hi @dkdkrkrkfkfk It sounds like you need an active optical HDMI cable.

@dkdkrkrkfkfk HDMI is a high speed connection but with a Q mini we are only talking HD pictures. Just in case you have selected 1080 50p outputon the Q box do yourself a favour set the box to output 1080i as yhst is the incoming signal (all European broadcasts are in 1080i),, your TV is likely to do a better job at deinterlacing and you halve the bandwidth your cable has to carry.

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
How do I change the setting if I can't get a signal? If I change it and then unplug the box does it go back to default?

@dkdkrkrkfkfk assuming you have checked the plug and socket at the TV end and ensured you are on the right input then it sounds like you have a dodgy cable. HDMI cables should not be bent in too tight a radius as you can break the cores.
A 10m HDMI cable should easily carry a SD signal even if of pretty poor quality. HD should not be an issue at 750Mb/s either but that length is too long for UHD which is where active cables come in. However for most applications avoid long runs if at all possible.
For future reference the way to reset any Sky Q box to 1080i which any TV with a HDMI interface can display is to enter Home,1,0,8,0,Home on the remote which is useful to know when you have no picture.

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
So I plugged in a Blu-ray player and it worked fine so it can't be the cable?
I put a small tv next to the box and changed the sky setting, I also reset the tv back to factory settings as it's weird it worked for a while?
still nothing
the sky engineer has been and he feels it's the cable
it just doesn't make sense
please help

Was your cable new?

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
@dkdkrkrkfkfk it is possible a very poor quality cable a bluray player outputs at 24HZ which uses less bandwidth than a HD 50Hz signal the Q box out puts. HDMI cables should be certified (the use of HDMI requires thst) but some are faked so it does depend where you bought it. These cables are carrying digital signals once the number of error goes above a certain level you lose the signal completly. If the mini connects using a different cable it has to be a cable issue.
Honestly mounting the mini behind the tv on a short cable is a better solution for both signal and control purposes.

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
The TV I bought is only 19mm thick, the plug socket had to be recessed in to the wall to fit the TV flush, there is no way I can fit a sky box behind it.
I can chop the hdmi cable about 3m in length and fit the sky box in the ceiling, going to give that a go
fingers crossed

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
@Chriseewhile you correctly say that HDMI cables need to be certified (it is a trademark) I have noticed that the Amazon basic range which are excellent are not certified. Perhaps Amazon is too big to care about following the rules.

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
@bob1234 vague recollection the rules changed a while back and so rather than the term HDMI cable being registered it is now "Premium" cables that are certified see here . Amazon probably dont want the extra cost and rely on their brand name but I agree their basics range are great cables in my experience.
However there are a lot of no name knock off cables around, not all of them cheap, so buy from a reputable source not any trader on a market place.

You're planning to "chop the HDMI cable about 3m..." and then reterminate with a new connector? There's a very good chance you'll introduce new problems this way. Why not just bite the bullet & buy a shorter cable?

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
I wish I could, the cable is buried in the wall and ceiling, I would have to back off the plaster and redecorate

Re: Sky Q mini box - 10m long cable
Missed that bit @Invisiblename you are entirely right that unless you know what your are doing and have the right equipment terminating a HDMI cable is not simple. @dkdkrkrkfkfk make a mistake you can fry the connectors at either end as there is 5v DC supply on one of the pins.
