Sky sucks but I guess that's because the relationship is akin to a pusher and a junkie.

Re: Sky HDR

Hey there, I'm wondering if anyone here could help. I have a LG UH605V TV which is a few years old. It's hdr compatible and so is my sky q 2tb box but for some reason the sky box doesn't display in hdr. If I use the Netflix app on the TV it says on the description the TV show is hdr etc and when I play it I get a little pop up at top of the screen saying hdr. But if I play content on Netflix or sky that is in hdr it doesn't seem to display in hdr I have the latest sky q update q13 and I've tried changing settings on the TV etc but I seem to be getting no where. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Sky output is set to 2160p/10bit?

Re: Sky HDR

@mandyb50

It is most likely that your TV doesn't support the flavour of HDR that Sky uses, ie. HLG

All HDR via the Sky box, including Netflix uses HLG.

Viewing Netflix via the TV app uses HDR10, which is a much older format.

Hence the discrepancy.

Re: Sky HDR

@Chodley  thank you for your reply, for some reason sky q box was set at 8k changed to 10 but still not showing in hdr. I rebooted the box and TV for good measure as well.

Netflix and Disney + on Sky Q actually use HDR10(PQ),  but for some reason the Sky Q checks that your TV does HLG before you can get Netflix and Disney+ in HDR.  Sky use HLG on selected UHD content.

Hi Mandy

Have you turned on the port on your TV to accept a HDR input? Based on the limited information you have told me, I am almost certain that its not been turned on. If it was, your SkyQ box would allow you to select 2160p 10bit and not limit you to 2160p 8bit. They are normally switched off by default...

Its a relatively simple fix.

  • First you need to go into your TV settings (Long press on the button with the gear icon on the lower right of the remote
  • Click General - the icon with the gear and wrench
  • Scroll down to the bottom and click HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour
  • Switch the port you are using for SkyQ input to on.

You should now be able to select 2160p 10bit in your SkyQ settings and IF your TV is able to play HLG format HDR, you will now be able to watch Skys HDR content. I don't know if you can watch Netflix HDR via Sky if you can't watch HLG content as Netflix uses HDR10 format but unless you have the port turned on and SkyQ set for 2160p 10bit, you won't get HDR regardless.

Any device you have that offers HDR via HDMI will need the port to be turned on. I don't know if your TV is HLG enabled but if your SkyQ box is set to 2160p 10bit and you still don't get HDR content, then its most likely to be your TV is not HLG enabled. HLG is a relatively new format for Broadcast standard HDR content.

Anyway, hope this helps...

Edit: just read further down, and it seems that you have 2160p 10bit and still not working. Maybe it might be worth just switching everything off at the wall, wait 30s or so, then power everything up again, wait for everything to reboot, check your Sky setting is still 2160p 10bit and try HDR again. If that doesn't work, then it is 99% your TV that is the issue... Sorry

Re: Sky HDR

Thank you all for your replies it's very much appreciated. I shall have to do my research when I need to invest in a new TV. But for now I'll just stick with what I have. Thank you all again for your replies you have been a great help.

Re: Sky HDR

I've just had a call from Sky. Apparently their systems can now process the 2TB V1 to 2TB V3 upgarde. I've processed my order and went for the self installation option (engineer appointments are going out into November)  and should get the new box in 3 to 5 working days. I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: Sky HDR

New box actually came yesterday less than 24 hours after it was ordered. Set up was easy (not sure what the £50 fee was for!). Menu is appreciably faster; Sky nature programmes with HDR look great and Disney + is MUCH better now. Just waiting for the software upgrade for Netflix HDR.
