Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

Well I can confirm that using my ASUS router, using ExpressVPN it works perfecty... I do wonder how long it will work for... I literally use the ASUS app and switch on on the OPENVPN for the time I need to watch on demand.. otherwise I leave it off for the duration.

Would be good if SKY can get a fix for this...

Although the VPN over 4G was a solution for me, I have moved on and now have no issue with Satellite Broadband & Sky Q On Demand/Catchup etc - I'm now able to kick Sky into touch as they've been completely useless in addressing this issue faced by so many customers.

As part of my journey with this issue, I have ditched setting up the VPN on my Huawei B618 as not even PureVPN tech support could get it to work. I did though try a Vodafone SIM in my router and have ditched 3 as the Vodafone SIM works fine with no VPN and I can now download all catch up and movies content.

Handy to know Vodafone works fine. I can't ditch THREE sadly as it's the only airtime that has decent signal where I am

I did find that a small dedicated VPN router worked well as an alternative (I used Pyramid WiFi from Amazon) though there is a VPN charge. Only drawback was that tje download speed was a bit slow but never failed.

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

That would probably work perfectly for me. I would probably just have that inline between the back of the Skybox and the rest of my home Lan kit.  Problem I have is all my current network is nicely set up and the PronRoute GSM router - whilst having OpenVPN on it I can't seem to make it work. I have an ASUS AC3200 but that has to be in router mode to initiate the Open VPN, at which point I have two bits of kit serving DHCP! Gets on a right mess.

I've been looking for a dumb box that would pickup scope from my existing DHCP scope, then run the VPN on dedicated Lan cable that goes Sky > VPN box > 2nd lan port on GSM router.

Thus a rising it touching any of my existing lan

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

My set up was SKY Q to Pyramid WiFi SSID --> Pyramid WiFi to Huawei B618 WiFi SSID --> Internet

Pyramid WiFi recommend using WiFi for connections and not Ethernet.

Very frustrating and another issue where Sky are being less than helpful. Over here they claim q won't work with a 4g router as it needs a stable connnection. Yet there are folks in the community who report their 4g connection works.

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

@Shimme Thanks for your post/comment.  I have worked in IT/networking for many many years too and have been having "No Subscription" errors with my recently changed setup.  FYI, I have 2 x VDSL connections each with their own router then I have a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X as the main LAN router 'upstream' from them both.  I recently configured load-balancing on that router (to make the most of the mere c.20Mbps download I get on each of the VDSL circuits.  Previously I just had an active/standby configuration.  The LB on the EdgeRouter is working very well but it did break SkyQ.  I was suspicious that it was something to do with the changing public IP addresses as the sessions chose different VDSL connections.  You saved me having to resort to WireShark to prove the theory, so thanks for that 🙂

In case anyone is interested in the future, I managed to fix my specific issue by tweaking the Sticky Settings for the LB configuration.  Now I have it configured to just use the LAN host source address for that, all seems good.

Hi ya.  Can you elaborate on this bit... What did it solve, specifically.

I ripped out my kit and started again. I have a ProRoute router as the main unit handing off the THREE connection and DHCP etc. I have a TPlink M5 mesh doing all the SSID singular internal WiFi.

What I can't now do is use the ExpressVPN I had configured inline between the ProRoute main unit and the rest of the nextwork as I have to turn it into Router mode to get the open VPN working. Which then blows out the network..

Just wish I could find a simple tiny box that sat inline between sky and ProRoute and did nothing other than create an OpenVPN tunnel between sky and and OpenVPN client.

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

Curious that my Vodafone Huawei 4G Router works fine with my Sky Q box. Well, everything works without issue except the box crashes almost daily, locking up leaving the fans on full blast. Pull the plug and it works  again until the next time.

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

Forgot to say. Bought this unit

GL.iNet GL-MT1300 (Beryl) VPN Secure Travel Gigabit Wireless Router,

Popped in my Nordvpn account settings, put in inline to the sky q box (SkyQ / GLiNET/ THREE router). Works a charm.

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

Hello everyone,

I've been suffering with this problem for a few months now, I don't have Sky Q still on Sky+ HD. I'm using 3 Mobile Broadband via TP Link AC1200 4G Router. Having read this thread I then connected my Linksys AC3200ACM Router running the ExpressVPN firmware to the Sky+HD box. I ran the VPN on that connection only, leaving everything else in the home network VPN free. In terms of my experience there is definately progress from using the VPN, films and other On Demand programs now at least start to download and most get 75%-80% of the way the through and then stop compared to not even starting before VPN, some even get 100% and then show "Failed".

Would appreciate if anyone has any further insight or experience with this that they can share, specifically:-

1. Is anyone else having issues with 3 Mobile Broadband and Sky On Demand downloads

2. Has anyone else had limited succes with using a VPN connection to get round the problem

3. I also noticed that this issue only affects Sky channels / programs, everything else works fine, ITV, BBC content etc, is that the same for everyone else?

4. Finally, has anyone found a full solution for this problem?

Thanks

Re: Downloading from Sky Q using a Vodafone Huawei 4G router.

9.9.9.9 is THE best DNS server relating to Sky or gaming, hand on heart. It resolves all your problems, and in relation to Sky, will stabilise viewing on Minis and support On Demand massively. Change it in the network settings on your Q box. Hope this helps.

Sky Q 2TB UHD Box (Hisense 43 4KTV) with three Mini boxes, Sky Signature / Sky + BT Sports / Multiroom / Sky Cinema / Sky HD & UHD. Community Fibre 1Gig + Unlimited Calls 800-900 Up / 800-900 Down.

Thanks but swapping DNS to 9.9.9.9 has not made any difference, still the same issues.
