Do I have to have new sky q box or can I keep the old one
I have just agreed a new contract with Sky and am happy with the terms agreed. The new contract includes a sky q box which an engineer will come and install. I have just read all the horror stories about the sky q box and have decided I want to keep the old box which I am happy with. Can I do this?

Hi @My2+sajar
Afraid you are not contacting Sky directly here as this is a customer forum.
If you need to contact them you need to persevere by phone.
There should be no reason why you cannot stay with Sky+ but you need to speak to Sky.
Select Need more help at the bottom of the following link and it will lead to a phone contact number

hi @My2+sajar
As @oldfella says you will need to contact SKY but do make sure you do before they come to install.
Once they have installed SKY Q , SKY no longer allow reversion back to SKY +/HD except for a very few (mainly technical) reasons

Your renewal terms will be based in moving to Q: Sky don't have to offer anything like the same deal for Sky+ HD which is now an obsolete platform (last manufactured in 2015) which they are trying to get rid of

Re: Do I have to have new sky q box or can I keep the old one
@My2+sajarContact Sky quickly and cancel, there is no need to renew your Sky contract just keep paying the old amount. I believe as Sky want to get rid of +HD they will not renew as such and all the best offers involve changing to Q.
I have Q and yes it originally had "teething" problems it has settled down and after a few updates works fine.
BUT
The interface is very different and there are a few features not included in Q Reminders, manual record settings including change of recording length, bookmarks, slow motion and may be others I have not noticed as I never used them.

Re: Do I have to have new sky q box or can I keep the old one
My 18 month contract was running out and I would be paying a lot more to let it run. The new terms include Sky Q and I assumed it would be an improvement. I have since read a lot of reviews that say it's nowhere near as user friendly as the old system and has many faults. The Trustpilot reviews are particularly scathing. I am 71 years old and tech is not my strong point. I am familiar with the old system and would like to keep it. I will call Sky and see what they say.
an engineer is booked to come and install the new box. If Sky say that I must have Q, can I just instruct the engineer not to fit it when he arrives?

You can certainly do that, but Sky could consider this to be an instruction to cancel your subscription with them. At some point in the next few years Sky will presumably be withdrawing the remaining 30% of Sky+ subscriptions anyway: it's horribly inefficient to keep legacy (Sky+), current (Sky Q) and new (Sky Glass) systems running concurrently. As for reviews, it's worth remembering that there are something like seven million Q households NOT writing negative things on Trustpilot.

Re: Do I have to have new sky q box or can I keep the old one
@My2+sajarI don't think age has anything to do with it and you don't need technical knowledge to use Q. I did not like the interface at first but got used to it. (age 76) if you are getting mini boxes sometimes there are link problems but there is always someone here to help. I still miss some +HD features but must not mention them again or people will shout at me.
BUT
If you don't want it cancel NOW and don't wait for the installer or you may find the +HD contract is cancelled if you just refuse on the day.

@My2+sajar my parents, both in their late 70s have recently got Sky Q and have no issues whatsoever once they got used to the system and start using voice commands.
You can always drop any query you have on this forum and it will be answered almost immediately (apart from the middle of the night)
I would definitely consider Sky Q because, as has been mentioned, support from Sky for the old Sky+HD system won't last forever.

@My2+sajar Just to add, you can still renew/negotiate a new discounted contract while staying with your Sky+HD box. Unless something has recently changed.

A new minimum contract period, probably, but the problem is it's not in the longer-term interest of Sky to perpetuate use of a legacy platform by offering discounts on it which are anything like as good as those on Q.

My current 18 month deal runs out in August, so I guess I'll find out in mid-July. On the previous two occasions that I've re-negotiated they've not even bothered to try to get me to switch to Q, I think it must be noted on my file that I've previously stated that I'm more than happy with Sky+.

It will be a milestone for Sky when they finally pull the plug on Sky+ / HD as a platform: I suspect it's already hanging around longer than they'd hoped. As always scale is an issue: a quick calculation would suggest that even if it's now only around 30% of the subscription base that will still be something like £1.5 billion in annual revenue.
