Indeed, your next provider will do the same once their new customer deal ends...

Your choice. From recent posts on here it does seem that decent deals are increasingly hard to find. If you choose to leave the same will happen at the end of your discounted deal with whoever you go with. Once you've been away for 18 months you'll be able to rejoin and benefit from new customer discounts.

You will be seen as a new customer once you have been away for 24 months if that is your plan or you could call Sky to see what (if anything) they will offer you to stay.

Most providers seem to be doing this now.

Re: News customers get better deals so I’m off
Cancelling can still prompt deals from the retentions department. It can be quite random whether they will contact you or not, but there's nothing stopping you getting in touch during your notice period to enquire if any deals are available. Again, it can be entirely random as to whether you'll get a deal or not, depending on who you speak to or what day of the week it is.
You also don't need to wait 18 months for a new deal. I left Sky Stream 6 months ago and Sky recently emailed with an offer of 12 months half price on a 31 day rolling contract if I came back, so that was £15.50pm for Entertainment and Netflix (basic with ads) for a year. I declined.
