Re: 2026 Price Hikes

well fingers crossed.  i have had email confirmation of cancellation with zero fees.  my sky account now shows it all ends on march 23rd.  As far as im concerned its all complete.  I dont think they can legally rescind it given they have provided written confirmation of my exit as they will be bound to it by uk consumer law.

Hopefully glass will be covered too eventually by offcom regulations  for being able to leave tv penalty free

Personally I'm somewhat suspicious of the Money Saving Expert article linked above: it appears to be conflating end of contract notification (which Sky and Ofcom have undoubtedly been in dispute about) with mid contract price rises that as far as I'm aware wasn't the topic being contested.

I guess it's possible that if the case over the former has finally been settled then it could have implications for the latter (perhaps with regard to a wider point about the power Ofcom has to regulate subscription television) but that seems to be something of a stretch.

Not sure, but it's definitely the first time that the Annual April Price Rise email has contained a "Cancel without termination charges clause"

** There may have been something previously about rises greater than 10%, but Sky ensured that the list price of each package didn't do that

Could be another tactic to reduce the number of Q subscribers and then tempt them back with Glass/Stream offers before the satellites fall back to earth ; )

I'd be surprised if Ofcom were competent enough to even begin regulating streaming services at the same level as traditional TV broadcasts. That would mean OFCOM having to start potentially going up against the likes of NetFlix, Disney, Amazon who are a lot bigger hitters than the traditional UK broadcasters.

I'm not saying that industry shouldn't have a level of regulation, but I'd imagine it would likely need its own new regulator which was built correctly and given the right powers from the ground up to deal with streaming.

Re: 2026 Price Hikes

Most streaming companies like Disney, Netflix etc operate on a month by month contract.  Every customer has the right to cancel if prices go up.  Because Sky insist on 18 or 24 month contracts it would be mid contract price rises that would be the issue so id assume those streaming giants wouldnt care less.

According to this article customers aren't obligated to take a 24 month contract for sky streaming services on signup and can choose between 24 and 31 day rolling contracts straight up

Yes but in this example you are only citing "price rises", there is more to the current scope of OFCOM than just mid-contract price rises.

As far as I'm aware, the Media Act really only gave OFCOM the power to uphold broadcasting standards for VOD content, and to lay out accessibility requirements for VOD content (e.g., ensuring all VOD content is subtitled).

Also i wouldn't put it past some streaming platforms eventually offering longer deals than just annual subscriptions, as for these platforms its all about subscriber numbers and trying to avoid the monthly churn they get on people subscribing to one platform for a few months, cancelling then subscribing to another. It's one of the reasons that streaming services are trying to bundle up with other things, as it guarantees a subscriber to a platform if they are getting it "for free" through another service, e.g., via a Sky TV bundle, or via a mobile phone contract or bank account. Then once they have that subscriber on board, not only does it help subscriber numbers but it becomes an opportunity to try and persuade that customer to upgrade to one of the more expensive premium tiers.

Re: 2026 Price Hikes

What generally happens is a few people moan every year, very few actually want to really cancel and it's all forgotten for another year.

Yes that is true but if you on,y sign up monthly rolling contract you don't get the discounts of the24 month contract. I might be wrong a monthly rolling contract you pay full price.

@DaveDrizen  yes you do pay full price but for the privilege of being able to cancel penalty free with just 31 days notice rather than being tied to a longer term contract

Re: 2026 Price Hikes

My discounts on my current TV contract adds up to £22. I can't see much value in paying the full amount just so you can cancel if it goes up a tenner over the 24 months.

Cancelling broadband contract after price rise April 2026

Martin Lewis (MSE) says that Sky broadband contracts, still inside the minimum term, can be cancelled without penalty fees if done within 30 days of a price increase announcement. Does anyone know if this is true? I've read my Sky contract and it isn't clearly stated.
