Why are previous films not made available when a new film is coming
I have noticed in the last few months that when a new film is coming to sky cinema, the previous film or at least 1 in the francise is not available.
This has happened to Insidious (4th not available), Ghostbusters (2nd of the remake) and now Dune ahead of Part 2 coming this week.
Can I ask why this is the case because I'm not going to watch the new film before watching the previous costing sky viewers and therefore not making it worth their time adding the new film.
Simply baffles me.
And while I'm ranting, why do sky play 2 series of a programme and then refuse to add season 3 even though it has been made and released in US.... (Chucky)

Most likely broadcasting rights issue. Sky have to obtain the rights to show films and TV shows which last for a limited time.

Entirely up to the rights owners, as @MarkGoldsmith indicates. They may, for example, think there's more profit to be made from increased on-demand sales (or even physical media distribution) ahead of a sequel, rather than the very small sliver of income available through a Sky Cinema re-release.

I think it might be that just not enough people watched it on Sky and then distributor looking for too much money for the rights sadly.

Absolutely stupid that Dune Part 1 is not being shown but they're premiering Dune Part 2 now. Does Sky think people will watch the second part of a film if they've never seen the first part?
I don't know why I bother with Sky Cinema the choice is basic, a lot of the same stuff and missing titles from certain franchises.

Re: Why are previous films not made available when a new film is coming
Dune 2021 film is Sky Store at the moment
Films that end up on Sky Cinema can often later be removed or change to be Sky Store or be digital purchase only with other providers as in Apple TV/Amazon etc
Broadcasting rights deals are required to be shown on Sky Cinema Channels
The on demand and live broadcasting rights deals are time limited and can vary how long they last as be for a few weeks/months/years
Dune 2021 may at some stage end up back on Sky Cinema if sky do a new on demand/broadcasting deal with Warner
Film Studios will often do a new broadcasting rights deal with a different streaming services that is why you can see a film that was on Netflix for example and then later be removed and then show up on Amazon or Sky or with other broadcast provider instead.
It's no different to other providers Netflix/Amazon Prime etc on demand versions of films also gets removed and added back at various stages due to rights deal expiring or been renewed

At least it was released digitally to buy , which isn't usually the case with dropped shows, it's still Sky's sister company though
The strange thing is it aired on Sky in Germany from 31st October
The most likely place for it to appear is probably Netflix UK in a year I suspect when it leaves Sky
