Why are previous films not made available when a new film is coming

I have noticed in the last few months that when a new film is coming to sky cinema, the previous film or at least 1 in the francise is not available.

This has happened to Insidious (4th not available), Ghostbusters (2nd of the remake) and now Dune ahead of Part 2 coming this week.

Can I ask why this is the case because I'm not going to watch the new film before watching the previous costing sky viewers and therefore not making it worth their time adding the new film.

Simply baffles me.

And while I'm ranting, why do sky play 2 series of a programme and then refuse to add season 3 even though it has been made and released in US.... (Chucky)

Most likely broadcasting rights issue. Sky have to obtain the rights to show films and TV shows which last for a limited time.

Entirely up to the rights owners, as @MarkGoldsmith indicates.  They may, for example, think there's more profit to be made from increased on-demand sales (or even physical media distribution) ahead of a sequel, rather than the very small sliver of income available through a Sky Cinema re-release.

I think it might be that just not enough people watched it on Sky and then distributor looking for too much money for the rights sadly.
