it's asking me for a pin when I want to record something. I haven't set up any pins.

By default your PIN is the last 4 digits of your viewing card number. 

Although, it should only ask for the PIN when you try to watch something, not when you try to record.

Be careful that's not actually a purchase. 

Setting a recording shouldn't generate a PIN challenge, although playing one back might well do so: this is mandatory if it's post-watershed content being viewed before 21:00
