From all the trailers I've seen the use of dark interiors and using natural light is unlikely to provide the "brightness" improvement some people will be expecting.  I doubt interior scenes will go above 200 nits.

I don't know about other  HDR formats but I found the UHD discs of GoT S8  (notoriously dark) in Dolby Vision to bring out detail in the dark shadows that HD version could not provide

But @nigea99 you know what the playbook will be when people start saying "why is House of the Dragon" so dark".

I see a lot of references to "House of the Dragons".  I think there is only one dragon😉.

It's s now been confirmed from sky that it will be in UHD HDR. But only through on demand. I'll happily wait and watch it that way. Hopefully it's got dolby atmos also 🙌

How long will it take Sky to get those UHD HDR versions ready though...?

It'll be a miracle if they manage it within 24 hours of release of episode 1. I can't imagine HBO will have released the masters early for the frame rate & HLG conversions to take place, but who knows. If Sky can spend a fortune on a lavish premiere in London's Leicester Square then it would be nice if they'd spend some money on getting the content they're promoting, out to their customers in the best possible format, in the least possible time.

I doubt it: imagine the security which that would have to involve.

Probably mostly HBO money, I would think.

Looks like the pessimists among us forgot about The 2am Club!

First episode is there now for download in HLG and Atmos .

Many thanks for letting us know.

I will be honest I was rather sceptical as to whether we really would get it in UHD and if we did when we it would be available. So to see we have got it in HDR with an Atmos track, as soon as we have is really  great news and for me a pleasant suprise. 🙂

Re: House Of The Dragons UHD

Unfortunately, the UDH/HDR download seems to be of a curious quality.

The opening blacks are purple/blue with heavy posterisation and the colours are way off...

I have chacked against a UHD HDR download of the HBO version, and it is significantly better.

Anyone know why?

Seems OK to me on my LG OLED C1 65" TV.

It's all about compression. I had a quick look at the UHD HDR version this morning (purely out of curiosity as I've no interest in the show itself) and on my OLED it actually looked like one of Sky's better HLG conversions.

I've also looked at the HBO Max Dolby Vision stream via VPN and it's less compressed, sharper and has better overall contrast, shadow detail and less posterisation.

It's always going to be the way with HBO content on Sky - compression will take place but the subsequent quality loss will only be apparent to those with an eye for it.

Re: House Of The Dragons UHD

Thanks for that - it confirms my suspicions.

Yes, I've checked the HBO download and it is indeed superior - its an 8.3gb file at h265 - but it is less compressed than the sky download - looks that that is the way to go...

i'm just a bit picky about these things.

Me too. That's why I don't watch much on Sky any more!

The Atmos mix is good but it looks like everyone is suffering from jaunndice.  On both HD and UHD HDR versions.  I think this might be down to "Artistic intent" to give it a medieval look?

Re: House Of The Dragons UHD

Something is off with the HDR version. In motion it's soft, annoying sky Q can't just do hdr10 or DV as it's on demand

Re: House Of The Dragons UHD

I'm seeing the same blue/purple colours even with my QN95A. I have no such issues on anything else with HDR including other movies with HDR on Sky Q
