so relaunching on a satelite most people with younger (toddler/very young kid age) children probably have a subscription for, either on Sky or NOW, so it makes sense making something so avaliable compared to on a hidden recommendation on their service

I guess the key thing is that the UK and US markets are different, and perhaps that is what Disney have realised, or even researched.

If you look at the statement that POP released when they announced the closure of their channels next month it says it all about the current state of the TV market in the UK. Obviously POP having still existed in the market over the past 5 years, when Disney left it, will have more metrics and a better understanding of what commercially works and what doesn't

Paul Dunthorne, Managing Director at Narrative Entertainment:

“With commercial value across the UK kids’ TV market now just 4% of what it was ten years ago, we’ve taken the decision to close our linear POP channels at the end of the year.” “We understand the importance of offering high-quality kids’ TV, and we’ve done everything that we can to maintain POP. But free-to-air channels for this audience are simply not commercially viable without PSB-style funding.” “We will retain our POP presence on FAST channels in the UK on Freeview, Samsung and LG and other platforms, and internationally, as these continue to offer commercial opportunities.”

Add to this that POP was a free-to-air channel in the UK, whereas Disney Jr is going behind a paywall and will require the additional Kids TV pack of services like Sky and Virgin Media, I can't understand the business logic for this.

Also just to add a 24x7 streaming channel without any ads, isn't a FAST channel, its just a free streaming channel, by definition to be a FAST channel its needs to be Free and Ad-supported.

The difference in advertising regulation is presumably also a factor in the viability of both FAST and broadcast in this context: there are lots of potentially lucrative things (such as high sugar cereal) which are very likely be restricted on 'childrens channels' here.

Seems a bit off that after choosing to abandon linear, Disney changes its mind and immediately gets to come back in a prime epg slot like nothing happened! (on stream at least).

Well there aren't that many kids TV channels left so I guess it was always going to be high up a very small  list.

Five years isn't exactly immediate.

As with any other holder of a UK broadcast licence they are entitled to a slot in a regulated EPG by paying the appropriate fee, and it's not like they can't afford it...

Perhaps more interesting that they are choosing not to be on NowTV, BT/EE or Virgin.

Re: Disney Channel UK returns!?

Had to power cycle to get it to turn up on one of my Glasses. I put it on for a few minutes - Mickey Mouse Clubhouse... and the memories came back about the endless hours I had to endure the theme tune when my lot were younger! Soon turned it off!!
