New number with different area code

I've started my switch over to Sky from BT.
I was told there was an issue and I'd need to get a new phone number.
Not a big deal.
However, the new number they've given me has the area code for the next town and not the one for the town that I live in.
This means I'll always need to enter the full number, including area code, to make calls to other numbers in my town.
Is this normal?

Re: New number with different area code

Looks like I've found the answer:

So I'm likely going to be moved to a different exchange.
If I move to another provider in the future would they put me back in the nearest exchange if there's capacity or will I now be stuck in this other one?

I'm not sure that it matters? 'Local' numbers will be extinct in the not very distant future as more landlines go digital and it will then always be necessary to dial the full number including area code.

Re: New number with different area code

Means I'd be connected to an exchange further away from my current one though. This is likely why they stopped offering me gigabit speeds. I'd worry that I'd be stuck on that exchange making it difficult to get back to the closer one in the future.
I've cancelled my order and am staying with BT now.
