New fibre broadband

Yesterday we had fibre broadband installed, the engineer who installed it thought that we would keep our phone number, when I dial it I am told that the number is not recognised

After broadband is activated it can take another 24 hours for the landline to fully function. 

Try dialling 17070 from the landline and listen to the automated message which should give your number.
