Missed call tone

My landline phone has a tone which alerts me to a missed call. When I look at the calls list there is no missed call. 
I checked that the phone was ok by plugging in an analogue phone and the missed call tone is there as well, suggesting it's a problem with the line/system. Has anyone had this issue.
