Landline making a funny noise - cannot make calls

Hi everyone.  I have plugged in my modem, wifi is working fine on the tv.  But my landline just gives out a weird noise and there is no dialling tone i.e. you cannot make a call.  As per the instructions, the plug from the phone which is supposed to go into the modum doesn't fit.  It fits in the Ireland socket in the modem but not the UK one.  So I dont know what to do.  Someone suggested a splitter but I dont know what one to get.  I dont even know if its the phone line.   Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thank you

All phones have a standard plug at the end of the cable. It's the larger plug in the image below. Just unplug the phone from the wall socket and plug the same end into your Hub.
