I have moved from BT to Sky and am trying to explain to my Dad that I won't pay BT any landline rental fee (he is interested in moving too). What is the best way to explain it to an 82 year old?

Perhaps:
1. It's part of the broadband charge. You don't pay line rental any more.
2. BT is just another telephone provider like Sky, TalkTalk etc. Why would you pay anything to BT or anybody else if your phone service is provided by Sky?
