Confused and worried-SCAM?

Hi all,

Won't go into the dregs of it but long story short I'm definitely on the paranoid side due to previous/ongoing cyber and real life stalking.

Moved home, changed to sky. Police are coming tomorrow to do some checks but I am miffed by this. I know what VOIP is, I didn't make this change. My activation date was 8/5. My sky account keeps changing and doesn't show the talk aspect anymore (I don't have a phone anyway but I appear to have an active phone number that rings out)

Spoke to sky online on the 10th and they didn't even know what VOIP was.

I can't log into my router at all and have no idea how almost 90gb of data would be used since the 8th and can see a device signed in that I have no clue what it is. Anyone have any idea? About the VOIP? And is it normal to have a phone number assigned and active but I only have one cable going into the wall and none in the phone one? Only the Internet one.

The plan I have is sky streaming with the puck and superfast broadband. I didn't request a phone line or sky talk but assumed it came as a part of the package. I know this sounds strange. I am just worried as odd as it sounds I don't know if someone has taken over the phone aspect or done some sort of redirection I have no idea.

@Ceeara Superfast broadband is delivered via your phone line, which is identified by an associated telephone number..

Sky's broadband and phone services are bundled. So you're right, you can't have one without the other, so what you have is normal.

When you have Sky VOIP, as you do, the phone service is delivered via your broadband Hub, which has a standard telephone socket on the rear panel.

That's because to them (and from the perspective of the user) it's just 'Sky Talk Pay to Talk'.  Since last September (and unless the ISP specifically offers no 'phone' service) all broadband switches involve provision of a system which contains VOIP under the hood because new PSTN telephony cannot be ordered (in advance of PSTN switch-off at the end of next year)

Re: Confused and worried-SCAM?

Hi Mark,

Appreciate your detailed and respectul response, I know I probably sound ridiculously anxious and naive. I genuinely panic at things like this because of the lengths the cyber stalking got to.

I have two officers from cyber security who have been amazing and identified what was happening at my last address/WiFi and who will attend new address to use the same technology that achieved that.

I just am aware my current mobile device may be impacted and the individual may have seen emails with sky details. I couldn't understand why a change was made in my portfolio 2 days post being set up and not having contacted Sky that day. I also didn't understand how the number assigned to me is active but I don't have a phone to connect it to. I worried that someone had managed to get access to the number via my skyid details.

Just a bit confused and appreciate the time you took to read my post and to reply

Thank you,really

Re: Confused and worried-SCAM?

Hi Timee,

Thank you for reading and replying. Appreciate the thorough response. I am not exactly sure around what all of this means but I will look it up.

I hope I didn't sound rude about the sky staff, I was just shocked they didn't know what VOIP was and kept talking to me about VIP and said they didn't know what VOIP was and then said they had to go on lunch and hope that helped.

Then added the fraud departments number, left me very confused  to say the least.

Thank you again

Hi @Ceeara I hope you're a little more reassured, but don't hesitate to post again and someone here will try to help. I don't think you were rude about Sky staff. It seems the adviser you spoke to didn't really understand what you were saying - their fault, rather than yours - and probably only confused things further.
