sky box has stopped working downstairs . It says it's not receiving a signal but the skybox upstairs using the same satellite is working fine . It is quite old now so suspect the box has given up .

@Dancav not necessarily. Your box downstairs uses different cables and a different connection at the dish.
Try restarting it by turning the box off at the plug for 4 minutes. While it's off, check that the dish connections at the back are still securely fitted.
