Sky SD basic set up

Hello,

How do I get the sky sd box (I think it's called that- it's the silvery one with a circular button with arrows on top and a blue light saying sky on it) to work? I don't know how it ever used to work. Do I need some sort of cable? A satellite connection? I have no viewing card either. It used to work with some cable which was connected to maybe a dish outside? Please let me know, from scratch, the basics.

Thank you.

It sounds like you are trying to use obsolete subscription equipment: that's unlikely to work.

A Sky+ HD box can potentially be used as a free-to-air satellite receiver through a compatible satellite dish and dish cabling.

Digital terrestrial television (broadcast from a mast and received through an aerial) needs a DTTV tuner, not a satellite television box.

BT Halo 3+ Ultrafast FTTP (500Mbs), BT Smart Hub 2

If you mean a Sky+ box these are no longer supported by Sky so they won't let you subscribe to Sky+, will not connect it to an existing or new dish and wont supply a new dish or a viewing card.

Re: Sky SD basic set up

It's not plus or HD, simply just sky box I think?

What is the process of just watching TV now? I've only ever used the box but recently moved homes. I just want this box to work. If I get a dish installed will it automatically work once connected to the box?

Re: Sky SD basic set up

When did you last use the box?

SD channels are being turned off?

Does the house have a DTT aerial which can be connected to your TV?

How old is your TV?

Re: Sky SD basic set up

Perhaps last summer or maybe a bit later

Yes some channels had gone

I don't think this house does, can I get it installed?

I think my TV is a 2009 Sony?

Much simpler to order satellite television from Sky: they sort out new hardware, dish, cabling and installation.

Re: Sky SD basic set up

Do you know how I can do that? Do I have to call them? Is it the same as watching with my box?

Many of the SD channels you watched then have closed🤔

Sky will only install a dish if you subscribe to Sky for 18 months ... you can do that online or buy phone .... the TV will need to have HDMI ports😉

You will need to contact an independent installl and pay for an aerial to be installed.

Re: Sky SD basic set up

Oh that's quite sad. I just wanted to watch some asian channels as it's quite inconvenient for me online.

Okay thank you! I will look into the two options.

Be aware that if Sky suggests Glass/Stream, that system doesn't have many of the International channels which are on the satellite platforms.

Oh okay, I will make a note of that, thank you!

Re: Sky SD basic set up

if the asian channels are still listed as working on a SD box you could always get a independent installer to fit a dish and continue to use your SD box

Re: Sky SD basic set up

If you want Asian channels they are not available via DTT ... so concentrate on sorting out a dish and in any case get a Sky+ HD box as long as your TV has HDMI ports😉
