Sky+HD box replacement failed recordings/ downloads

My multi room box failed, it was displaying just a flashing red power light. I bought a refurbished 895W box to replace it. I installed it and put my viewing card in and it didn't ask for the card to be paired to the box and I could view all of the subscription channels immediately. Whenever I try to record or download programs they go into failed state. I called Sky customer services and the lady thought it was because the card and box weren't paired, so she did that but I still have the same issue.

It's no longer possible to pair a Viwing Card with a replacement box. Your Card is locked to the box that was using it at the,end of October last year.

Thank you for your response, I obviously don't want to hear that I purchased a box in error but surely Sky customer service should know that.
