My 87 year old mother in law has just moved into a new house. She lived with her sister before and the sky account was in her sister's name so she needs her own account. She has always had sky plus and still has the boxes. I called sky to get a subscription sorted for her and asked for a sky plus viewing card. They said they don't do them anymore and she will have to have sky q. I showed her ours and she got really upset, she just wants the sky plus to record her soaps and game shows. No streaming, no broadband, no box sets etc etc. Is it true that you can't get sky plus cards anymore or were they just trying to sell an expensive deal.

For context, Sky Q was released in early 2016 so it's now been around for more than eight years. Sky+ HD hardware ceased manufacturing the year before that.
As @GD1 indicates, Sky hasn't offered new subscription on Sky+ hardware for a while now, and before then only in properties which weren't compatible with Q.

You say as a new customer this isn't possible, would an existing customer be able to request sky plus cards? It seems an awful waste that all these perfectly good sky plus boxes are being committed to landfill
