999 just resets the remote. I wouldn't expect anything to happen, apart from the LED in the remote flashing twice to confirm success. It just means that any TV code you had previously programmed will be deleted.
Next step would be to re-programme your remote with the correct code for your TV.
I think they just typed 999 without following the full programming instructions thus the message "channel not available" 😞
