I am getting it on a lot of channels. I can't remember which ones exactly, but I had the message pop up on a program I was watching from the planner (it was an SD channel but not BBC) and I think on Great Movies at one point. But I definitely have sky + HD box..

I just wanted to comment that I have a Sky+HD box and the BBC HD upgrade message appears in a huge white box in the middle of the screen that completely obscures viewing and occurs randomly on any channel. You have to manually back up to get rid of it, which means it has ruined my recordings as I was not present to remove the message.
I have no intention of ever upgrading Sky from my present box as it's too expensive, and since I have Sky+HD, the message is redundant. I have no idea why Sky wishes to ruin the very viewing I'm paying over the odds for. No need for any reply, I just wanted to add my experience to the conversation and I doubt it will be remedied. Currently looking to ditch Sky after being a customer since 1991.
If the message can't be removed on the recording that implies it was part of the broadcast and not something that could be removed by the viewer. This is the first i've heard of a large white box in the middle of the screen but it won't be something Sky themselves are doing, as the Sky+HD boxes although quite old and no longer supported, aren't affected by the BBC SD closure.

A large white box is what I am getting also which I have to back up to get rid of. I'm not convinced sky are not doing it because would the BBC tell us to specifically upgrade to sky q? Why would they if we are capable of getting their channels already? Its not the same message as appears on sd boxes which display on BBC channels only and gives us various options on how to upgrade. This only tells us to upgrade to Sky Q.
I too am no longer happy with sky, after two decades of no complaints, as I feel I am no longer a valued customer on sky +. I appreciate they want to move everyone onto Q, so they can close sky + etc, but with a few million people happy with sky + it might be worth them keeping it going for the foreseeable, because in the not too far future satellite tv itself will probably be redundant.

Of course it's Sky doing this. It's a big white box in the middle of the screen telling you to upgrade that you can't get rid of unless you manually back up. The reason it ruined my recordings is that it stays on the screen unless you back up, so if you time a recording and aren't there to see the message and remove it, it will be recorded that way. It appears on any channel at any time including interrupting my on screen menu! I have complained to Sky and they don't care. It's just another way to try and force people to upgrade.

Yes, it is Sky doing this and I have the same white box in the middle of the screen that turns up multiple times a day on any channel including the menu screen! It ruined my recording of a program I was really looking forward to - how is that justifiable if I'm paying for it? I complained to Sky and it was pointless. Way too expensive and not worth upgrading. When Sky+HD goes, I go too.

It would be interesting to see a screenshot of this message, it's not something I have seen reported other than on this forum and sounds very unusual. Any on screen graphics that aren't part of the broadcast and can be removed by pressing back up (like a red button prompt) shouldn't be part of recordings. And if it was part of the broadcast, like the red banner on BBC One SD, everyone would see it.

It isn't a TV software update, it's Sky.

Here it is:
Definitely a message generated by a Sky box. But not one I've ever had on my Sky+HD box.
And, the fact it appears on Recordings is bizarre.

That's what I find most puzzling about this. Any message or other graphics generated by the box shouldn't appear on recordings.

Unless, it's a very old Sky box and the recording is being done on a VCR.

I'd add that the BBC has announced their SD satellite channel switch-off is being brought forward from March 2024 to January 8th 2024.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/work-warning/news/hd-2023
ITV is starting its SD closure too, with Border Scotland, Channel, Wales and UTV SD versions shutting down in January 2024
