Currently paying £69 pm for sky q rising to £74 next month.
Contacted sky about switching to sky stream to save a few ££ but the best they can do is £64 pm for the same package even tough I wanted cinema taken off.
new customer deal for stream is considerably cheaper.
Would I be best cancelling completely then getting stream in my wife name as a new customer ??

Others have found cancelling almost always results in a better deal😉

Not always. So if going down the cancellation route you have to be prepared to actually lose your Sky services.
Historically it was pretty much guranteed you would be offered a better deal than you were on a renewal deal if you cancelled, however its not guranteed. There have been posts on this forum of customers who gave notice and weren't offered any further deals at all.

My take on this is that if you're worried about money and the cost of a TV service then the sensible thing to do is cancel.
During the 31 day notice period your service continues as normal. Sky often will contact you during this period with offers to stay. If they don't, let the cancellation go through.
Once your Sky Q service ends you don't have to return the equipment immediately - you have to wait for Sky to send returns packaging. This is a good time to try out other services to see if you actually need or miss Sky. Connect an aerial and try Freeview, use the apps on your smart TV to stream live free-to-air channels, all of which are (as their name suggests) free.
If however, you find that you really miss having Sky then it's very easy to be pro-active and contact Sky yourself. Phone them up and ask to speak to retentions or use the web links to 'come back to Sky'. Have a cost in mind of what you are happy to pay for the service and be honest with them. Sky would rather have you as a paying customer (even at a lower rate) than not a customer at all.
More often than not they will be able to get you on some sort of affordable package for your needs, and can re-activate your existing Q box before you need to send it back.

... and if you still want access to Sky subscription channels there's always NOWTV😉

My advice is be very careful before switching to Stream, especially if you record live events like sport and want to replay. Have a look at my posts to see why, but fundamentally, build in an extra £5 per month for ad skipping (and that's not neccesarily a perfect solution). I used to have Sky HD, and moving to stream (without ad skipping) has been my biggest regret of all of my lifetime of TV viewing.
