I find the responsiveness of all the third party apps on Sky Stream to be very slow and sluggish compared with the same apps on my TV, Firestick and Apple TV 4K box. Both in terms of how long it takes for the apps to open, general navigation and length of time for a stream to start and buffer up to full quality. Sky Stream does it slower than any other device I own. This is on 500Mbps symmetrical FTTP broadband, tested on WiFi and via ethernet (which maxes out at about 85Mbps)

It's absolutely fine for live TV (though still takes a couple of seconds to buffer those streams to full res) but the apps are just too slow for me to use regularly. 

It's clearly been built on a budget with minimal RAM cache. 


I will have to check but seemed alright for me, I could go around the apps okay? 

I will check it later on.

I can go round the apps okay too... it just is noticeably more sluggish than the other devices I mentioned.

Your experience of Stream depends a lot on what you are used to. If you're impatient (like me) and want everything quickly and without fuss, Sky Stream very quickly becomes tiresome. Apps take longer to launch, streams take longer to start, fast forwarding is nightmareishly slow, voice control is virtually unuseable, the list goes on. 

I now use an Apple TV 4K box which is fast, reliable, intuitive and understands my voice 99% of the time. Sky Stream only gets used occasionally for access to one or two shows I want to see in UHD/HDR which I cannot get on the NOW app.

Just ordered the sky stream and this is such a let down, if there is no plans to fix. I will be sending this back

These issues have been outstanding for months, years in some cases. I very much doubt Sky will ever get them resolved to most SkyQ users satsifaction.  I don't know what their long term strategy is but if they are hoping to close down their satellite service and migrate users in to Stream I for one will cease to be a Sky customer.

@SlenderRobert I fully agree with your post 15 above (from 6 months ago).  I also have 500mbps FTTP broadband and find some of the apps very slow. BBC iPlayer is particularly tiresome.  I frequently press the remote again thinking I didn't press it correctly the first time.  A couple of weeks ago I selected a BBC programmes from my continue watching rail and timed it.  It took 20 seconds to start playing 😡.

 

Some Apps have without doubt quickened up over the last six months but there is still a along way to go. 

 

You mention that your Ethernet maxes out at 85mbps.  This is about right as the Ethernet ports on both Glass and Stream are only 100mbps compatible.

I'm with you both. Sky Stream is just too sluggish to be pleasant to use. I timed the Channel 4 app the other day and it took nearly 30 seconds from clicking on a show in my playlist to finally opening and streaming it at full HD quality. My TV app takes less than 10 seconds and the Apple TV 4K box is even quicker. 

Sorry Sky Stream, you just aren't good enough. The service could be excellent, and I'd be willing to pay a bit more for it on better hardware, but right now it just makes the simple act of watching TV extremely irritating.
