Sky Puck broke my Samsung Neo QLED 8k telly

Hello there,

Around 2–3 months ago, we upgraded our broadband contract to one that includes streaming services via the Sky Puck. I was genuinely excited to receive the device and couldn’t wait to experience the new features.

When the puck arrived, I plugged it in and enjoyed the service for a few days. However, after about a week, ghosting began to appear on the screen. What started as occasional interference quickly escalated into persistent, 24/7 ghosting.

Frustrated, I contacted Sky. The call was answered promptly, and the representative was courteous and tried their best to assist. Despite multiple troubleshooting attempts—including rebooting both the TV and puck, and restoring the TV to factory settings—the issue persisted.

Since then, I’ve raised the issue several times. Sky replaced the puck and sent the original one, along with the HDMI cable, for testing. I’ve received a letter confirming that the cable was not the cause, but I’ve yet to hear anything regarding the puck itself.

Our television cost £4,000 just four years ago and is still relatively new. In contrast, the puck is worth around £20. An independent engineer inspected the TV and recommended a part-by-part replacement process—starting with the power cable, then the One Connect box, processor board, T-board, and so on. Each part would cost £150–£200, making this a costly fault-finding exercise.

So far, Sky has not provided any findings from their investigation into the original puck, and it appears they are unwilling to accept responsibility for any damage caused by their hardware.

I understand how this might sound—perhaps like someone complaining about an expensive TV. But my partner works incredibly hard, often 12–16 hour shifts, and this television was a small reward for his dedication. It’s deeply upsetting to see it compromised by what should have been a simple upgrade.

Any clues and ideas folks?

Miss MK

Yes, I must say I can't see how the Puck's HDMI connection could cause damage to your TV, given that its output is in the order of  10s or 100s of one thousandth of a volt.

That aside, you could raise a complaint, if you haven't heard back from the team investigating your Puck: https://www.sky.com/help/articles/how-to-make-a-complaint

@Matina2701  What makes you think a puck caused damage to your TV, it could very easily be a fault with the set itself if the ghosting is present on any HDMI or internal apps.  You don't say if all inputs & onboard TV apps present this ghosting?

Hey @GD1,

Thanks for your response!

The ghost is present on the apps, the freeview channels and any other feature that tv offers, whether there is something plugged in or not...
We had things plugged in, from pc, mouse, usb stick to external memory. Never had any issue with the tv until the puck was plugged in.

I know what you saying but it stinks...!

Thank you!

It's highly unusual for a Qled TV to get image retention so I have no idea what could have caused it. I'm struggling to see how the puck could have as well. It is very strange. My hunch is it is a panel fault. Samsung used to have a 10 year guarantee against screen burn because they knew that it was practically impossible to happen. Not sure where you go with this but good luck.

Well, yes, unless that can be proved....

Perhaps one point to consider is that 8K television hardware is produced in limited quantities with no longer term track record: given the technology was only released in late 2018, a four year old model would be a relatively early one.

This sounds like your TV has developed an internal fault that coincidentally happened when you connected the puck. It's possible that a component was already failing and failed when the puck was plugged in.

I had a similar issue with our old TV, it was happily working until I connected a new TV box from another TV supplier and it then a fault occurred. The fault was already there but didn't show up until I asked it do something new.

Sounds awfully like "my telly develeped a fault and I'm blaming the Sky puck with no evidence"

I had an LG OLED which was around £2500 and at the 4 year mark started to randomly turn off, the then Q box would also freeze more , I tried everything but eventually the TVs motherboard was the fault i believe. I'm not repairing it as OLEDs have dropped in price and it's just not economical.

4 years I don't believe is enough time for a TV but they do fail and I seem to read OLED fail more . the sad norm for modern electronics.

i feel your pain.

My first Panasonic OLED is still going strong after about 9 years, now enjoying a 2nd life at the in-laws.

I appreciate this is a sample size of 1.

I doubt it was the box I can't see how it could cause much harm considering it's input is 5v. Moral of the story here is insure expensive items. Maybe if the box has damaged it it may come under accidental damage on home insurance. I've made mistakes before with expensive items and been burnt. You wouldn't buy a £4000 car and not insure it, all your tech should be treated the same. Rule of thumb if it's more than 2 weeks wage then insure it. I hate to be that person to grill you but learn from mistakes, we all make them.

The car analogy is a bit weird since it's illegal to not insure one.

But still many.people drive around uninsured.

Ok but the point is the vast majority of people don't choose to insure their car because of its value. It's because they have to.

Does it really matter,, the point is don't have expensive stuff and not protect it. I was trying to hint at using the home insurance to their advantage without being that obvious.
