Saving to the Cloud

Can anyone please advise on how Sky saves TV shows and films to the cloud and what they generally decide to exclude ? Im aware that not everything is avalible to watch "on demand" or via "linear broadcasts" for example I acn wtach Road Wars on linear brodacasts on my Sk Stream puck but I cant watch it on Sky go on my ipad or even download it on there despite the fact that its avalible on Sky stream anytime I want to watch it. One thing which did suprise me was a couple of days ago the film "Shaun of the Dead" was on comedy central, so I added thsi to my wtachlist assuminng that this would be avalible later on to wtach either as "catch up" or linear broadacst" etc but I once I checked my watvhlsit later on it was only avalible to wtach via the Sky store, this suprsied me somewhat as I was under the impression taht surely Sky made their content avalible to watch on "catch up" etc for a short amount of time after its broadcast, obvisouly previosuly many yaers ago when I had Sky + I would have simply recorded it in adavnce and then had it avalibel to wtach afterwards at my convenience.

If anyoen can advsie then id be most apprecitive.

Re: Saving to the Cloud

I'm very interested in any clarification on this too.

There are a number of shows that I have set to cloud record (on Sky Channels) - these recordings show up fine on my Sky Stream, but not on the Sky Go app, and I'm not really sure why.

You would think if you have cloud recordings attached to your account, then these would be available from wherever.

@mancsmark i guess one thing to check is if the ones that show up on your sky stream puck are indeed cloud recordings of the linear broadcast and that the playback isn't via a third party app instead.

It would appear that via the Sky Go app, the only playback currently available are those shows which are available via sky's on-demand section, so shows which are actual cloud recordings or available only via third party app don't work via the new Sky Go app.

For the "shaun of the dead" example, did you add it to the playlist from the EPG? If you did and it still didn't record t could be that Comedy Central only had the broadcast rights for the film and not the on-demand rights, and where this is usually the case I believe this means Sky legally cannot take a cloud recording of the broadcasting as a result.

It is one of the annoying things with just having everything labelled under "Playlist" as you don't actually know if this means the content will be "recorded" from the linear channel if you added it via the EPG, or if it won't and you would then need a subscription to whichever third party app has the on-demand rights. Hopefully with the playlist being renamed in  SkyOS 2.0 this is something which will become more intuiative to use and easier to understand what will and won't get cloud recorded.

Re: Saving to the Cloud

AFAIK it's because the streams used by Sky Go and SkyOS are completely different and separate from each other.

SkyOS isn't really saving anything to the cloud, not individually for each customer anyway. When a customer adds something to a watchlist/playlist or sets it to 'record', all it's doing is tagging a section of the broadcast stream that is stored on a server. This tag basically allows you to watch this saved section whenever you like (or for as long as it's available.)

Sky Go is really more of an on demand streaming service, it's not a link to a personal cloud DVR, not yet at least. It may be something Sky are considering in the future but for now it's functionality remains fairly limited. It's not giving you access to cloud recordings on SkyOS because that's not what it's designed to do.

Movies are complicated because they have different rights issues, depending on where they are shown. A channel will often only have a live broadcast/streaming rights to a specific title, meaning that viewers can only watch it live. Once that broadcast has ended the viewer will have to watch it on whatever service holds the on demand rights for streaming it, which is likely to be a paid for subscription service such as Sky Cinema or, in the case of some movies, a paid for rental or purchase service such as Sky Store.

Cloud Recording

Last night I added the NFL Cowboys/Giants game to my playlist however when I checked this morning the game isn't on there nor is there any way to watch the full game on demand via the NFL section in the sports category. Am i doing something wrong or is there some sort of contractual issue that prevents Sky from showing these games on demand?

It's impossible to say.

SkyOS operates in mysterious ways... it's an entirely closed system, the workings of which are known only to Sky.

Some stuff will 'cloud record' and some stuff won't, but unless Sky label content as such, the customer will not know whether it will or not until after the event.
