Picture quality through AVR

Hello,

My set up is my OLED TV connected via HDMI Arc to an AV receiver and the Puck connected to the AV receiver.

If I compare the picture quality of my puck  with my Amazon stick, which is plugged directly into a HDMI port, then the puck is worse.

So just wondering if I should just plug the the puck directly into the TV and not the AVR.

Thanks

@CinderKona

Depends on your AVR & the cabling you're using.

Your AVR needs to be capable of full HDMI pass-through and both HDMI cables used (puck > AVR and AVR > TV) ideally need to be the same speed and spec.

This will allow full bandwidth UHD & HDR to be passed through the AVR to the TV.

Check your AVR specs allow all HDR formats to be passed, not all of them do. If it doesn't then you'll be better off connecting the puck directly to the TV and sending the audio via ARC instead.

Re: Picture quality through AVR

Thanks for replying. I did try this last night and there was no improvement in the picture. MY AVR is a Marantz NR1510. I do use the Sky puck supplied cable. I think the Puck picture is not quite as good as my Firestick.

That's a good amp which is fully compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR10 & HLG, all of which the Stream puck supports.

The puck produces a very good image on the live channel streams, but I agree, I got better image quality from the third party apps on other streaming devices (along with HDR10+ and frame rate matching) so I cancelled.

Re: Picture quality through AVR

I run my puck through an AV amp (Denon AVR-X2800H) to an LG 77" G3 OLED and I find the picture perfect on most channels (HD ones) using high speed HDMI cables. Playing HDR a content is amazing quality from services like Prime Video and streaming things like The Penguin, etc on Atlantic. If I choose a channel like Legend Extra, the image is less precise and noticeably lower quality than say streaming ITV4HD for example.

Have you tried streaming The Penguin on Atlantic in HDR? That should look amazing and if it doesn't then maybe it could be cables or maybe a setting. I haven't used any cables supplied in boxes with kit, I use Audioquest Pearl 48 10k HDMI a for all interconnects

Yes I've watched the Penguin and it's quality is ok but not super sharp. It's not the TV or the AVR as it's only the puck which is below par. Maybe it's the HDMI lead as I'm using the one Sky supplied with the puck.

Have you checked your display settings on the puck to make sure it's set for uhd

Re: Picture quality through AVR

Double check the settings, and if you're streaming Penguin make sure you've selected the HDR version. I cannot explain just how clear and pin sharp it is for me, it's just brilliant. So if all the settings are correct, the stream format is correct I would definitely try a better cable.

if you search on Amazon for a 48-Gbps 4K-8K-10K UHD HDR HDMI cable that is what spec you need and as I said I use Audioquest Pearl 48. They are directional so when you get them make sure you plug them in the right way round source end in the puck, the display end in the AV, then source in the AV monitor out and display into the TV HDMI inout.

also, if your TV a has multiple HDMI inputs, using the HDMI 2.1 if you have it will be better, but if the ATC supports HDR a then it will be at least HDMI 2.0
