Thats correct, Sky will need to confirm you are the account holder before agreeing to process the cancellation and they typically do this via a phone call ( although typically the cancellation period will start from the date you began the conversation and not the date they process the cancellation).

To cancel Sky need to verify your identity and they can't do that from an email or, in some circumstances a private chat.

Tillhat, you do not have to talk to an agent in person over the phone.
I have just cancelled my sky Tv today without talking to one. I emailed them and they asked me to get in touch to verify I was the account holder. I did so as follows:
Go to - sky. com. Then - My account, cancel, then at bottom click on still need help and then there are a couple of options to contact Sky. Click into message section. Wait and you will be connected to an agent. Explain you want to cancel and they will take you through verification steps and confirm the date from which your account will be cancelled I.e. after 31 days as long as you are out of contract.

I cancelled my Sky Stream subscription a couple of weeks ago.
You do need to phone Sky to cancel.
When I phoned on a Friday afternoon, the expected wait time was 40 minutes.
I hung up and tried at 9am on Saturday morning, and got straight through to a very helpful lady with a Welsh accent.
She did ask a couple of questions about my reasons for cancelling, but there was no hard sell to try and retain me as a customer - she accepted my decision and processed my request.

To be honest, I would be happy to keep Sky Stream but it costs too much with all the bundled extras (Netflix, Discovery+ etc) that I simply don't want.

It is repeatedly stated on this forum that you need to phone sky to cancel. This is incorrect. You do not need to phone to cancel. You can do this via the message option. All the verification process is then gone through to establish you are the account holder etc. Then the package you are on is cancelled and the date of cancellation is given I.e. 31 days after you first contacted Sky to state you wanted to cancel your contract.
Also, there is an email that you can contact Sky to first notify them you wish to cancel. And your 31 days will start from the date of this email. Many state on this forum that there is no way to contact Sky via email, which is also incorrect.
If you do wish to telephone Sky to cancel, you do not have to!
I sorted out my cancellation by email and message yesterday.

I've just sent my cancellation email.. let's see if I can do this like you said as I can't speak on the phone as it gives me huge anxiety.

Just an update for anyone else using this prodouct who wishes to cancel, ive today cancelled with immediate effect by using the message service. Took a while, but all done without a phone call.

and for those that say that they cannot contact Sky by email - the email is: mysky sky.uk Put the @symbol in between. I couldn't put in the full email as Sky prevented the message being sent!!

I have cancelled Sky in the past using email but they rang me to go through the palavar of what can we do to make you stay blah blah.
My cancel email is set to send from my email account, 31 days before my contract ends and so I am looking forward to cancelling without any phone calls.
I cannot understand why I can fully join Sky online without a phone call but cannot leave them without a call.
I would have thought more security is required to set up an account, direct debit etc. than cancelling the same 🤔
