Bbc flakey

Hi,

I've recently made the jump to Stream but still have my top bumper Voltz Oomph Virgin Media broadband until 21st August.

Tonight BBC 1 seems really flakey, mostly

picture. Netflix speed test was 24.

I have an Ethernet  connection to a powerline.

a) what can I do?
b) could the kind installer on 21/8 somehow split the broadband from where I want my router / hub (in a different room by my PC) to the lounge where my puck is?

Any thoughts or advice?

thank you.

Hi @Muppet77

Sky Glass / Stream requires 25Mbps for HD and 30Mbps for UHD. Given your netflix reading indicates slower speeds, it could be the cause of the issue.

What is the power line adaptor rated for? Was your stream connected via WiFi before ethernet? If so check that WiFi is switched off in the network settings and you have powered off your puck at the main, as they have a habit of still using WiFi even with ethernet connected.

Given that your BB is with Virgn can't comment on what they will or can do. But you can run an ethernet cable and use a gbit switch etc to achieve similar. But you need to increase the speed to your puck to reduce the issues.

Re: Bbc flakey

NB:

the Ethernet power line is plugged into a socket as opposed to an extension lead.

by "flakey" I mean the picture stops - starts every few minutes. Sound is much better.

Re: Bbc flakey

Thanks @mikealanr

its a Dlan 550 Devolo. Yes I did have WiFi turned off but hadn't rebooted it so thanks for that tip.

the Netflix speed check this morning gave 31 so it's seems broadly similar.
a wifi speed test on my phone in the same room from the powerline gave 28.

I will see how it goes and see what the installer says in a week and a bit.

thank you.

Do you mean run Ethernet cable from the router to the Puck?

Hello @Exiled-in-HH

No, it's an Ethernet from the powerline to the puck.

the router is in a different room at the moment near my PC.

What does split the BB mean?

Re: Bbc flakey

I wondered if there was a way to split the feed going into router at all.

atm my VM splits into a tv line and then the BB line to the router. Little different but I wondered if it'd somehow solve the low oomph to the lounge puck.

I've gone for the 900 BB package or whatever it is which is similar to my current VM power so I am worried that the new sky BB won't be able to crank up much more...

Re: Bbc flakey

No ... the Openreach Fibre line goes to the router😉

Re: Bbc flakey

What type of VM box do you have. I thought they'd stopped using that split BB a few years ago.

I think they stopped the special feed when the V6 was introduced.

Sky Broadband, Sky Stream via ethernet
Amazon Firestick
Previously VM

Re: Bbc flakey

It's a 360 box.

I have one cable feeding a box in the lounge and another cable that goes to another room, where it splits into a box and into a router.
