Do you need to have an aerial when using a puck ?

The aerial socket and DTTV tuner is there so that Sky can use the same hardware elsewhere in Europe: in some countries it's a legal requirement for set-top boxes to be able to access state-run terrestrial broadcast television as well as subscription services.
