ok from day 1 both my boxs main and mini have been connected using wifi. i have just recently connected both via ethernet cable. my query is= yes i have done resets on both boxes. (main reset and turned off 2.6 gh wifi) this now shows connection to a number i dont reconize ? done the same reset on the mini and this shows the same number as the main. my query is i want a wifi signal in the garage so because i have turned wifi 2.6 g off does that mean the mini will not push a wifi signal out (the mini is the closest to the garage ) as the 2.6 gh wifi is turned off would it now only send the 5gh wifi over ? if i turn both the 2.6 and 5 gh wifi on the main box will this stip all wifi to other devices etc

Are you on Sky broadband?
Honestly I would invest in a wifi mesh to solve your garage requirement and leave the sky boxes connected over ethernet and disable all wifi on those.

Thanks yes I am using a sky router. I do use a sky booster in the garage and the speed is good. I presume the booster will extend the signal from that mini box no or does it extend the signal from the router ?

Hi @toptinker
Best to invest in a simple unmanaged Ethernet switch in your garage.
You can then connect the mini and your Q booster to Ethernet.
When all boxes are connected by Ethernet you can then switch off all Q box WiFi.
Start with main Q box and first carry out a Network reset with the Ethernet connected.
Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Select connect wired to non Sky Router (or Sky router if on Sky Broadband). Do not carry out any WPS and just wait for the box to connect. It may take a couple of minutes. If it does not connect there is an issue with the Ethernet connection.
As soon as it connects go into the Q box hidden menu and turn off WiFi.
To enter hidden menu press Home and navigate down to Settings but do not select Settings.
With Settings highlighted press 0 0 1 Select.
Go to Network to turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.
Repeat the network reset on any minis in the Mini Home menu with the Ethernet connected. Again do not do any WPS and just wait for it to connect.
Once it is connected go into the mini hidden menu (same procedure as above) and turn off both bands of WiFi. Confirm before exit.

Thanks I have done this and turned off the wifi settings. But when I check in settings it says it's connected to my wifi ? Even thought I have turned it off

ok update, i have now got this. both the main box and mini box are connected over ethernet. i have turned off wifi 2.6 and 5.0 signal on both. looks like its all ok. i am getting a good wifi signal from my router to the booster in the garage. and therefore i can connect the tv, firestick mobile etc.
my query while setting this all up is yes i reset both boxes (the connection showed up as a number on both that i dont reconize lets say 5550. once i had turned the wifi off this is now fixed on both. when i have had a look at this today i see that number has now changed to what i know as my wifi number on both. i can connect 2 ways to my wifi which is lets say skyQ and skyQ 2.6ghz. This skyQ2.6ghz is what i see when look at the set up ? so am i still hard wired or has the set up reverted back to wifi even though i have it hard wired etc ?

It's 2.4 😉
Don't worry about the network name, the box makes it up and it seems to be based on some identifier it sees via whatever network it's using, which could be the same as the wifi SSID if the router decides that.

Thanks I do remember the sky engineer telling me that these boxes perform better over wifi. This I will prob never know?

Nah, nonsense.

Has anyone succeeded in connecting a Sky Q Mini to the Sky Q main box over ethernet (by plugging the Sky Q Mini into an ethernet port of one mesh WiFi access point, and plugging the Sky Q main box into an ethernet port of another mesh WiFi access point)?

How long should I wait after completing the above steps before considering it unsuccessful?
It's been an hour now and I'm still getting the error MR104 ("There has been a problem finding your Sky Q box on the network...") on the Sky Q mini.
The Sky Q main box is working fine connected by ethernet.
My network set up is as follows:
- EE VDSL (all that's available in my area) running at a max of about 60Mbit/s.
- TPLink Deco XE75 Pro mesh WiFi.
- Sky Q main box is connected by ethernet to the "main" mesh access point (which itself is plugged into the EE hub).
- Sky Q mini box is connected by ethernet into a different mesh access point (which is successfully connected to the "main" mesh access point).
- I've other devices also attached to both mesh access points which work fine.
I followed your instructions above to the letter.
Thanks in advance for your help!

On mine I am using powerlines for the minis and ethernet->mesh node for the Q. Which is then wifi connected to the rest of the mesh.
Your setup sounds like it should work. Have you done a network reset on the mini? Have you disabled wifi on both Q boxes?

I finally got it working. I followed oldfella's instructions - many thanks. It took 3-4 hours (or so, I fell asleep) for the ethernet connections to work. I'm very happy.
One of my Sky Q Minis isn't in physical proximity to my mesh access points, albeit it's close enough to get a good signal from it. Ironically it never was able to get a stable signal from the main Sky Q box (that's what happens when Sky used mid-1990s tech). For that one, I used a 6E WiFi extender with an ethernet port, and plugged it into that, and turned off the extension functionality so it's in effect just a receiver.
