Use of Sky mini box in a summer house

Hi all,

I believe there have been a few posts of a similar nature about this, but I'm hoping someone could part with some expert advice for my scenario.

I have a Sky Q box and 2 mini's. Q box and the mini's are connected to the internet via wifi.

ISP is Virgin.

I would like to move one of the mini's into a summer house. WIFI doesn't extent out there.

In the summerhouse, I have an ethernet socket, that is connected directly to the Virgin router in the house via CAT 6 cable.

Connecting the mini in the summerhouse via ethernet isn't working. I understand this is because my ISP is Virgin and not Sky, and the mainbox is connected via wifi.

Can anyone offer a solution as to how I might get this to work?

Thanks for your time.

Regards, Mike

hi @MJS6

If you can connect your Main box to the router via ethernet as well then this should enable the mini to connect

Hi nigea99

Thanks very much for the reply. Its not possible to link the main box via cable unfortunately due to the location of the router.

I'm not adverse to trying to extend wifi out into the garden, if thats a possible solution. Any guidance on that would be appreciated.

Thanks

hi @MJS6

As you are with Virgin the minis do not connect to your wifi but instead use a wifi signal generated by the main box so extending your wifi would not help.

SKY can provide a booster but generally most people's summer houses etc. are too far away even with a booster.(boosters neeed to be placed around half way between)

Could you consider connecting your main box to the router via Powerline adapters - these use your mains cablling to provide an ethernet connection at each end with the mains cable in between.

Re: Use of Sky mini box in a summer house

Thanks again Nigea99.

By an extender, do you mean something like the attached image?. I have this from the property we used to live in, but have not needed it where I am now.

Happy to try the powerlink adapters, would that have any effect on the otehr mini that we have in our dining room that is connected via wifi?

Also, the electrical circuits for the down sockets in the property and the power to the summerhouse are different. Would this be an issue?

hi @MJS6

I have to admit the boosters are not my area of expertise so I cannot advise

I believe the other mini would still be OK to connect via wifi as it does now even when connecting the other mini via ethernet

As you already have ethernet in your Garden room then this would not need a powerline connection - just to connect the main box to the router

BTW if you don't have enough sockets on the router you can use simple unmanaged switches to provide more

P.S. I may add I have no personal experience of Power line adapters but several here do.

I have had a quick search for the SKY Q boosters and the image you show does seem to be one - although I can't guarantee it

I have found this article :
