I will try to make this as simple as possible. The information I have received so far is contradictory.
I have a Sky+ 2TB box. It is on its last legs and has intermittent technical issues (like telling me there is no satellite signal on BBC1 whist recording a programme on BBC2).
.
I have about 8% free space on the Sky+ box and I would like to upgrade to a Sky Q box.
Can I install a Q box and still watch the recordings on the Sky+ box?
In essence I want to run the Sky+ box as a sort of DVD player, at least temporarily until I have watched all the recorded programmes.
Some information says I can't but the Sky salesperson said I could. Some info says the Sky+ box can be used as a Freeview type box (if I cancel my subscription - a strong possibility) but can/can't view recordings.
I'm a little confused!
(not least because today a Sky agent offered me a Q box for £29/month whilst another offered me one for £41/month).

You will lose all recordings on your Sky+ box except purchased films.

lose access to any recordings as a result.
You can still use the Sky+ box as a Free to air box but you would need a hybrid LNB installing as Sky normally replace the Universal one that you currently have with a wideband type for Sky Q.

Only until the Sky+ box reinitialises or otherwise requests subscription verification. Once either of those occurs, access to the hard drive ceases because it's a subscription-only feature.

That is correct (for reception only, not recording/playback) as long as there's a compatible LNB on the satellite dish: it won't work with the standard Q LNB.
