Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

Been enjoying sky q on an ethernet cable with good speeds but since sky updated the box on version [Q270.000.10.09L (5u193ht)] it's been a nightmare with lower speeds of 30mps instead of 89mbs on a 100mbs cable which the cable i'm using is a cat 6 1Gbs cable. strange thing is on our virgin router normally i've got my ethernet port on port 3 but for some reason after the update it's been hopping onto port 4 instead of 3 with all the other boxes which makes them to be on port 4 to. the other boxes are on wifi though on which i don't get it.? cause i've got a ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs of our house into my bedroom on port 3 ethernet cable. The question is how do i make my sky q mini box behave and make it stay on port 3 like it used to. Does anyone on else have this issue or i'm i the only one let me know regards jamie.

Is there any app on Sky Q that requires more than 30Mbps to operate? Are you experiencing problems watching content because of this speed reduction?

Or are you just flagging it because it seems strange that it has dropped, even if it doesn't have any detrimental impact currently?

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

Yes it does have an big impact on our connection. Cause on Netflix I do speed tests and normally get around 89mbps but now after the update it goes below that 30mbps or to even 16mbps on ethernet then starts saying you can't currently watch tv at the moment as there's a connectivity issue on the network. Constantly saying it as I've tried rebooting all the box's still the same issue everything been fine since the update.

Have you rebooted the router?

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

Yes tried that but still doing the same thing. The main box downstairs is getting 130mbps but goes down to 112mbps but minis is getting 30mbps to 40 or even 20 sometimes, Even we are supposed to be getting 1gb of speed on virgin, so not sure what's going on. Been waiting hopefully if sky will push another software update that would hopefully solve this issue.

This thread is very confusing.

Yep, I'm still not sure what we are trying to diagnose here @ADDragonFire91?

For example, I'm pretty sure the Ethernet port on Q is limited to 100Mbps, so you can't be getting 130Mbps through it.

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

I've tried to be more honest with the problems were facing or like describing the issue but that's what's happing since after the update like lower speed being dropped. Not sure anyone done a speed test on Netflix on there sky q mini box you know what I mean. Forgive me if I'm not being more specific or anything but i do try to explain the issue we're facing.

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

The Ethernet capability of all Sky Q boxes regardless of version is 90 Mbps. If you see a speed of more than this being reported by an app, it's either not giving an accurate reading or the box is using WiFi.
Occasionally the Ethernet stops working leaving the box running off WiFi. The fix can be anything as simple as a Q and / or router reboot, or a full reset.

Unless the lan card has failed completely.

Wifi capability is 195 Mbps for a Main Q STB and 150 Mbps for mini boxes.

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

I've turned off the wireless signal band and it reads 89mbps speed on the main box but not on minis. But on my mini box and other mini boxes in our house it's reading 40mbps with wireless turned off on my mini box that's on Ethernet to. The 2.4ghz band doesn't work cause I've turned off 5ghz and the picture freezes. on the 2.4ghz band, can anyone else do this on their box to see to if it's not just me like going into 0.0.1 select in network you'll see 2.4ghz and turn off 5ghz band if your 2.4ghz band works then it's my box but if it doesn't work for you to then it the update.

Don't forget to put your 5ghz band back on again though.

Re: Slow Ethernet speed on Sky Q Box

@ADDragonFire91 I'm a little confused as to what you mean when you say hopping between ports 3 and 4. Devices can't hop between Ethernet ports, unless I'm completely misunderstanding what it is you mean.

I would normally recommend Ethernet over WiFi in most scenarios, but with Sky Q it doesn't always work in your favour. Ethernet will be of benefit where distance or interference is a consideration. But while on Ethernet bandwidth will be reduced to 90 Mbps or less, and your mini box while wired to your router will actually communicate within the internet through your main Sky Q box, thus slowing down further.

If your mini boxes are within decent 5 GHz RSSI of your main I would recommend trying unplugging the Ethernet to your mini boxes and connecting wirelessly to your main Q. 5ghz needs to be enabled on main and mini(s). 2.4 GHz is best left disabled.

The exception is if you wish to connect your gateway box over WiFi which would require 2.4 GHz while using any router other than a Sky Hub 3 or 4.

Its important to power cycle any Q node following any changes to fully embed the changes.

This should at least give your mini more stability.

Unless using Q nodes as WiFi extenders there is no real benefit to speed much above 30 Mbps, which is the average requirement for 4k streaming.

If your issues persist then you should network reset all of Q and rebuild your mesh.
