SkyQ with Ultrafast - how does it work/get set up?

Hi all,

We've been using SkyQ and Sky Fibre for several years and have finally been able to upgrade to the new Ultrafast Fibre this week (500mb).

New router due soon and commissioning in a fortnight. We also took out the Sky Broadband Boost option, Sky WiFi Max wasn't an option as we have SkyQ.

How does it all get set up with the SkyQ kit?

Currently we have Ethernet between all SkyQ devices and the main SkyQ box and one Mini act as WiFi boosters. Using static IP addresses for SkyQ devices and some DHCP exclusions for printers and NAS.

Does this all get disabled with Ultrafast, and we may end up with new boosters, or does the SkyQ mesh get left on?

From what I've read, the SkyQ mesh can drag the new hub WiFi speed down, but I can't find anything clear on how this new setup will all work.

Thanks for any reply.

Chris

Essentially the setup will remain the same, but with a Sky Broadband Hub instead of a Q Hub.

Yes, the Q mesh isn't ideal with 500Mbs and Gigabit FTTP because the Q television hardware is now somewhat antique and not capable of slinging those kind of speeds.

Thanks, so do Sky do any network changes or do we have to change things all over internally?

No issues disabling WiFi on the SkyQ devices as they are all on Ethernet anyhow.

Openreach and/or Sky do all the work up to the ONT ('fibre modem') but the customer is expected to swap over the Hub models and carry out any custom configuration.

Whether you keep the Q mesh at less than maxim speed or disable it and put in a modern mesh solution is up to you: it's perhaps worth remembering that almost no devices (apart from gaming hardware during installation/ patching) actually need hundreds of megabits of wireless delivery.

Re: SkyQ with Ultrafast - how does it work/get set up?

I get that for bandwidth. We struggle now with WiFi coverage so possibly the new router will be better than the current one and we'd either not need the SkyQ Mini as a repeater or we'd be better off with the new repeaters given we are also trying the Broadband Boost option.

Our router/hub is quite literally in corner of a large house, which doesn't help.

We do throw quite a bit of data around though. My job is most of it and my laptop has WiFi 6e built in which should be way faster for what I do often than sticking to the SkyQ mesh speeds which are slower than the new fibre speeds.
