SkyQ Silver 2Tbyte - ethernet into switch slows the entire household Internet down

This is confusing me.

I'm not sure if this issue has been here forever, as we've never tested any download speeds, and just assumed that as we've had most things connected via ethernet, SkyQ included, we'd be hitting the top end of our broadband speeds.

For info:

SkyQ Silver 2Tbyte - maybe 8 weeks old, it was replaced after our last one died.

Currently Sky 1Gbit broadband and Sky Hub 4.2 router - router shows we've connected at 999.000mbits download.

SkyQ box WiFi is turned off, connects to Netgear GS208 gbit switch via ethernet.

Sky Hub connects to this same switch via ethernet.

If the SkyQ box is connected to the switch, no device on the whole ethernet can get download speeds much above 120mbits/second.

If I disconnect the SkyQ box from the ethernet, we've getting downloads anywhere between 600 and 800mbits/second -which is way better!

If I connect the SkyQ box via ethernet directly into the router, ethernet downloads are also between 600 and 800mbits/second so this is all fine.

Why would connecting the SkyQ box to the GS208 switch cause such a problem for download speeds?

Hi @nrynryuk   Faulty GS208? Faulty Ethernet cable? Have you tried a different slot. I use three GS108s between my Sky Q box and Router with zero problems. What exactly is your Sky Q box, 32B0xx, 32B1xx or 32B2xx. The old (Silver) box 32B0xx only has a 100 mbps netword card.

The SkyQ box I assume is the latest version given it was replaced 6-8 weeks ago? However, it shouldn't matter if the SkyQ box was only 100Mbit, that shouldn't affect other GBit devices.

I am going to try a different switch, I tried different cables, ports etc. and no different.

The PS5 goes through the same GS208 switch as SkyQ went through and is all fine for ethernet speeds when the SkyQ box isn't connected.

Hi @nrynryuk Hardware version, Home -> Settings -> System info -> Hardware version. I would lay money on you not having the latest box 😀

And the chances that this issue doesn't exist on the later 32B2xx boxes?

Hi @nrynryuk   I have a 32B2xx box with zero issues. If you have Netflix, what speed does it report Get Help -> Check your network.

Re: SkyQ Silver 2Tbyte - ethernet into switch slows the entire household Internet down

SkyQ Netflix app over ethernet directly into the router - 116Mbps

SkyQ Netflix app over ethernet and GS208 switch - 130Mbps

With SkyQ connected to the GS208 switch, the PS5 network test drops to 140Mbps - but is 800Mbps when I use ethernet from SkyQ directly into the router.

Hi @nrynryuk   Sorry, I'm out of ideas. I would try a different switch, which I assume is connected directly to the router.

Point of note - the Sky Hub 4.2 and probably most other Sky Hubs etc have flow control - non-managed switches don't usually have this.

Which likely explains why plugging the SkyQ Ethernet straight into the Hub solves the problem as the Hub prevents the Q box from the broadcast storm.

Not exactly an actual fix but it is an explanation.

Yeah it's the box spamming the network. Which is pretty impressive for a 100Mb device on a gigabit network. The joy of broadcast packets.

It's a Gbit device is it not?

Only later gen boxes. Not 100% sure on this model. I think if it's UHD capable it should be 1Gig

Lights on the switch ports sometimes tell you, or admin UI

It's UHD, we have the package for this - given the Sky box Netflix app speed test was over 100mbit/s and last I checked anywhere, this is a gbit Ethernet box.
