Sky q box chooses an unknown sky WiFi instead of our house wifi
Hi. Our main sky q box is automatically disconnecting from our main WiFi and connecting to an unknown sky WiFi.
I go into settings and change if back to our main WiFi but it changes back. It's causing a lot of problems on our 2 mini boxes. I also can't use my Skygo app to watch recordings because I can't connect my phone to this unknown sky WiFi as we don't know the password. Can anyone help please? Thanks

That's a weird and common symptom of the Q just losing its connection to your router. The SKY##### named network is its internal mesh with the minis.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any way I can block the main sky q box from using the sky internal mesh you mentioned? We really need the q box to connect to our house WiFi so we can connect the minis to the same network. Thanks.

Hi @Leanne310
On 3rd party Broadband, afraid the minis if using WiFi must connect to the main Q box Sky WiFi mesh. Minis will not connect to 3rd party routers.
There is no way your main Q box will connect to a Sky WiFi unless you press the WPS button on a Sky router while carrying out a Network reset on the Q box.
First make sure your main Q is corrected connected.
First reset your broadband router.
On 3rd party broadband and your router does not have a reset button, reboot it by disconnecting the power lead for 30 secs and then reconnecting.
Wait until the router is completely back and running and then try a Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to connect by WiFi to your router. Even if reset is not listed there is still an option to connect by WiFi to Sky or 3rd party router
On 3rd party (non Sky ) broadband then you need to enter the SSID and password for the router 2.4 Ghz WiFi band.
Once you get the main Q box connected carry out a Network reset on the minis. Start with the one nearest to the main Q box
Network Reset found in mini Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to WPS with main Q box.
You will be asked to press the WPS button on the main Q box (not the mini as the Network reset will start the mini WPS automatically).
When you get the first mini connected then for other minis use WPS on the nearest Q device main Q box or previously connected mini).
Failing all of the above you may need a Sky Q WiFi Booster to position midway between your main Q box and the minis and you will need to contact Sky directly.

It will always use both. Unless the router connection fails as is happening here. A very common issue.

Re: Sky q box chooses an unknown sky WiFi instead of our house wifi
Thanks for the reply.
So our main sky q box is saying it is connected to a sky WiFi. And this is an internal mesh? I'm not sure what that actually means. If it's not connected to our actual house wiFi how is it able to download movies etc?
This is something that has only happened very recently. The main sky q box always was connected to our house WiFi. Not it's not. It's connecting to a sky WiFi that we have no idea about. We connect it to our fast home WiFi and it automatically disconnects and reconnects to this unknown sky WiFi. We live in an old house and have a system of WiFi extenders to allow the mini boxes to work.
thanks for any advice you can offer.

Something really strange this morning. Sky q main boxed working and showing the sky network connection in the network setup.
mini boxes working perfectly and show they are connected to our home broadband router ie a different one from the main sky q box!

Re: Sky q box chooses an unknown sky WiFi instead of our house wifi
Yeah I'm 95% sure this is how the mesh works if you are not on Sky broadband, even though it's not properly documented. One of the boxes (or a booster) will decide it is handling the connection to the main network on behalf of all of them and it doesn't have to be the Q
but normally they still show the name of the main wifi network even if they are not the one connected directly to it. The SKY one showing up on-screen is a bug, I think.

Re: Sky q box chooses an unknown sky WiFi instead of our house wifi
Sky q has a wierd wifi and network setup generally - it has a reserved connection on the 5GHz wifi frequency that can auto config itself.
I had a wired q box once with a wifi network in house using the router the q box connected to, and another next door in the caravan on a different Subnet- the house was 192.168.0.X, and the caravan used 192.168.88.X. We were having trouble with internet generally, as we were using 4G mobile to connect to the Internet, and while I was trouble shooting at one point, I set my laptop to open the Subnet (so I could connect to 192.168.X.X as I set the third octet subnet to 0 - so 255.255.0.0). The Sky box then set itself up while I was diagnosing the problems to bridge between the 2 subnets and connected the 2 routers. Hadn't touched it, just had it on in the background watching junk on the tv, and then spotted that I could still access both subnets after Id set the laptop back to 255.255.255.0, and after poking about found the bridge that the sky box had created between the 2. Turned the wifi off on m sky box after that - dont need random devices that auto config themselves on my network.
If you want to know what devices and networks are on the different frequencies in your house, which should help some to diagnose the problem, there is an excellent open source app foe your phone on the play store.
My advice would be to hard wire your sky q to your router using ethernet though, then the other devices can use the wifi unimpeded, and the q box should always connect first.
