Where as Sky, once it's recorded it's saved on the box until deleted... ok need to think about that one

Or the hardware drive fails, or satellite television ends entirely (which is likely to happen around the turn of the decade)

Technically 'recording' is permitted by a limited exemption to copyright law which enables time-shifted viewing: it's not intended to be or promoted as an archiving mechanism.

You're of course absolutely right that the hardware can fail, but the likelihood of such failure is much smaller than of something being removed without warning from the cloud and becoming unwatchable as a result!

As you say, recording is permitted for time-shifting but no mention of how long 'time-shifting' can last is part of said law. In any case, why even bring up the law as not a single person has ever been prosecuted for keeping something on their PVR for years, or for keeping a video tape recording for decades!

Well of course they haven't since as you say, there's no time limit. What law would they have broken?

He raised it to make the point that people have got used to being able to keep recordings of broadcasts and don't like the idea of being beholden to the content owners but that's been a bit of a short term anomaly. It never used to be possible and it will go away again, so don't get too attached to the idea.

I respectfully disagree with the notion that it's been a 'short term anomaly'. It's been possible to record things for longterm storage using the latest available technology since the invention of the VCR, then using DVD recorders, then PVRs - so that is over 40 years! It's hardly surprising that the population is attached to the idea...

Indeed - but this is why the rights owners love streaming.  Total control (of their material) and can 'force' adverts if they so choose...

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Some of the (older) population ; )

An increasingly sizeable proportion have never known local media storage is a thing...

As @PandJ2020 indicates, the content rights owners really want their ownership back, and there's essentially nothing we can do about it.

It would certainly be interesting to see some proper stats on this... My view is that you're understating the impact, as in local media storage has been very 'real' with Sky boxes right up until Stream launched which is still super recent, so a broad range of ages are used to this even now. Of course there are already blurred lines as many shows are also streamable on-demand with no expiration date, so absolutely there will be a range of views. Agree that media consumption today is much more fragmented and significantly more streaming-focused than it was even 5 years ago, and a world away from how it was 10 years ago.

You're right about the rights owners, doesn't mean we have to like it! I also think there are some fundamental things which need figuring out - for example people who due to their own schedules enjoy timeshifting entire sporting matches / events by hours or even a day or two. Not sure the rights holders have an issue with that (they don't exploit those rights anyway) but without local PVR storage, doing this is not always possible...

I don't count VCRs because the quality was so apalling no one could be attached to that.

The older population, yes (in which I include myself). I don't think the Spotify / TikTok / Netflix generation are that bothered.

p.s. Where did anyone say you have to like it?

That wasn't directed at anyone, just a turn of phrase 🙂

Re: Sky cost just keeps getting worse, can you still bag a deal?

Were going away in our Caravan down south this Friday for a few weeks, and thinking of calling up to cancel our package.

If Sky don't make a good enough offer for us to stay, and we go through with the cancellation, is there a period of days we could still call back after the holiday (or during) to revert the cancellation? Or once it's cancelled that's it...no going back

Is there for example a 14 days you can still watch Sky or till the end of the next billing date which you have paid for, then it switches off?

Just to advise we are completely out of contract with everything, and no deals on account

Movie buffs

The notice period is 30 days during which you still have full access to everything. You can cancel the cancellation anytime during that time. Or wait until 'day 31' and probably get a better offer to 'come back' (and all recordings will still work from before) 😉
