Hi @MPos1971   You need 1000+ nits for a good HDR picture.

My (2020) LG OLED is 700 nits which isn't bad.  But I see the latest models are pushing 3,000 to 4,000!  😳

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

Your eyes are the best judge but it may not be bright enough for HDR without some tweaking.

This thread prompted me to check my 2016 LG B6 and it is 550 nits... 😳

For context, the original Sky Glass was tested at 425 nits, with gen 2 hitting around 1200 nits.

I think they're looking at the Peak 2% window to get that figure. Imagine a blank screen with a small white dot that takes up 2% of the screen. They're measuring the brightness of that dot.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/nano81 has more detailed figures and overall the Nano 81 is poor for HDR.

You can get away with a bit less on OLED as the contrast with proper black is greater.

Re: Sky UHD is so dull it’s not worth watching

My Samsung QN94A has a peak brightness of 2000 nits,  yet Sky Sports is often way too dark. I often switch to HD when it's bad.

It's only Sky Sports where I have this problem. Other UHD sources are fine.

I have all the correct settings. I tried switching to 8 bit but then it only displays HD

So why the problem with Sky Sports ?

Does switching to the standard picture mode brighten it up?

What mode do you normally watch  other content ?

I don't know the modes on Samsung but most TVs have modes like Vivid or Sport & other very bright modes (often used in TV showrooms).

These modes tend to be nearly always pushing the brightness as high as the TVs can handle

HLG, as used by SKY, can appear overall duller than such modes  - although the peaks in brightness  will be similar

HDR provides (as the name says) a higher Dynamic Range but HLG  & any other HDR mode  can't push the highlights more than such bright standard dynamic range TV modes.

Re: Sky UHD is so dull it’s not worth watching

I watch both HD and UHD in 'Filmmaker' mode to give the most accurate picture. If I put it in 'Dynamic' (Vivid), you need to wear sunglasses with my TV !

Watching anything in HD looks great.

I can brighten the UHD image by tweaking 'Local Dimming', 'Contract Enhancer' and HLG.

But from what I've since read in other forum (lots of people with Samsung complaining about this) there seems to be a problem with Samsung TVs and the way Sky implement HLG

Ahh  someone with my view on modes 🙂

Edit : I bet you do need Sunglesses with 2000 nits my Panasonic OLED only has around 700  (although I use THX Cinema mode on it anyway)

As you might guess I cannot explain this unless it is, as you suggest it may be,  a SKY Q / Samsung compatability issue

Sorry I can't help and hope you do find out why & hopefully get a solution

This should not be the case. It's still UHD, just not HDR.
