Sky Q to games console

Hi, I'm currently have a games console connected to my sky Q box in the bedroom via ethernet but the connection is very slow and laggy, the router is in the living room the connection is even worse when set up via wifi, can the ethernet port on the back of the Q box be use for connecting consoles to the Internet?

@hAiRy+HiPpY+24I am not sure what you are trying to do as you say you have the games box connected to your Q box by Ethernet.

Remember if you want to use Ethernet ports the mini box is 10/100Mb/s rather than the 10/100/1000Mb/s one on later Q main boxes. Also if you do not have Sky broadband and your boxes are linked by WiFi then they generate their own rather tenuous 5Ghz link.

If your speed is OK at the router, directly connected not your WiFi speed, I would get a couple of high speed powerline units with Ethernet connections and use them between your game box and router.

Re: Sky Q to games console

The router and main Sky box is in the living room, I have a Sky Q TV box in the bedroom, it's not my house so I can't move things about or run long cables everywhere, I am trying to get the best Internet connection for my games console which is in my bedroom, I currently have my console connected via ethernet to the Sky Q box, which works but it's is very slow, average 15mbs, when connected via WiFi, it's worse about 7mbs

Back to my suggestion about powerline units, no wires and the fastest connection you will get. If your connection is slow at the hub there is nothing you can do to improve it.

As @bob1234 has said, Powerline adapater or a Wi-fi repeater / booster is your best bet, Minimal wires and minimal mess.

My views are my own and I will assist where possible.

Sky Q 2TB UHD, 2X Mini Box, Sky BB UF1, Booster 4

Re: Sky Q to games console

Thank you both for your replies, Sky have told us that the Sky Q box in the bedroom is set up as a WiFi booster, the homeowners pay extra for this, would an additional booster still work/ make a difference?

@hAiRy+HiPpY+24The mini box will act as a hot spot automatically if Sky is your broadband provider. If not you can turn the hot spots on by going into advanced network settings. The box is what they pay extra for. If Sky provide boosters they are free.

However what is the speed at the hub if it is not high enough nothing will improve it.

Fair comment @Dallen9798 I hate wires so have opted for wireless connection

My Sky Router is situated at the back of the house for fibre UltraFast Broadband downstairs

Middle of the house downstairs I have a Sky booster box the white one also I pay extra for Sky Broadband Boost each month

One Xbox S console connected to Sky Q Mini box  via ethernet in one bedroom

Another Xbox S console connected wirelessly in another bedroom some distance away from the Sky Router

Re: Sky Q to games console

So I've finally manged to test the speed at the hub and it's an appalling 35mbs, is this an issue with sky that they need to sort?

Are you on a FTTC connection - I used to get around 35 when I had FTTC  even though the cabinet is at the end of my street (although I am with BT not SKY)

BTW I never had a problem streaming UHD with such a connection

Re: Sky Q to games console

Does this mean it's only a 40mbs speed? They pay an awful lot of money for the broadband, I would have thought it would be better than what it is, the WiFi is slow even when in the same room as the hub

@hAiRy+HiPpY+24So long as it is stable it should be enough to use two pucks but probably not the additional load of a games box if you are  trying to use a fast on line game. It may be that you will have to shut something down particularly if you are trying to stream UHD.

@hAiRy+HiPpY+24 from what I can see it looks like you are on what used to be a 40/10 speed profile(this used to be an old broadband package)  and is being limited to this by the high noise from my knowledge the noise has been inflated to keep you on the lower speed. What broadband package are you paying for ?
